Anyone know what 'pwn'ing does?

PWNING is very simple. PWNING and creating a custom firmware via the PWNAGE tool goes behind the apple FW installation which allows you to run custom applications. PWNED firmware is basically just apple firmware with some extra software installed on it. It goes away when you restore because when you restore all you are doing is wiping away the firmware and just like the apple firmware custom ispws can be deleted. Hope that helps explaining it a little.
Pwning noobs is the process of humiliating your opponents, usually by use of head shots and knife kills.
But from what I'm reading, something happens that 'prepares' your phone to accept the custom non-apple firmware to begin with.
Just putting your virgin phone in DFU will not make it take a custom ipsw unless you 'pwn' it first right?

That was the old pwning method, before 2.0.
All you have to do now is put it in DFU mode. And restore with the custom firmware now. So, here's a step by step:
1. Create custom firmware with Pwnage Tool or WinPwn.
2. Put iPhone in DFU mode.
3. Restore iPhone with custom firwmare using iTunes.
So I take it this step is no longer necessary. I only asked because I tried to winpwn my 3G - created the custom ipsw and then put it in DFU (as per the usb notification i received), but winpwn kept telling me that it is not in DFU.
So i killed winpwn and went to (unpwned) iTunes that detected my iTunes in restore mode (blank screen) but I kept receiving a 1601 error when restoring with the custom OR virgin 2.0 ipsw.
i haven't tried the latest winpwn 2.5.0.2, but in the previous version it still had the button to Pwn iTunes. Look for a similar button in 2.5. If it is indeed there, make sure you CTRL+ALT+DEL and kill the process called ituneshelper first. Hope this helps.

Question is why did restoring the virgin apple ipsw also fail? Cuz I already had the 2.0 on it? That was my only solace. I was able to reboot and get out of DFU mode and haven't tried jailbreaking it yet.

My only guess there would be that you weren't in true DFU mode. It can be tricky if you've never done it before. I would just search youtube. There are lots of video showing how to put it in DFU mode. After that just keep trying jailbreaking in DFU mode until winpwn recongnizes it. Just remember, the screen will stay black in DFU mode.
