I am using my Macbook Pro to connect to a VPN server that I have set up on a Windows 7 box at home. It is currently a PPTP VPN because I have not found another option for Windows 7. Network preferences says that Encryption is set to "Maximum (128 bit only)". Does anyone know specifically what encryption is being used? I have a high concern for security (so I shouldn't be using PPTP anyway), so I'd rather know now if this is a good solution or if I should look into something else.

Thanks.

My macbook pro runs Mac OS X 10.6.2.

System Preferences -> Network -> + -> Interface -> VPN -> VPN Type:

L2TP over IPSec
PPTP
Cisco IPSec

Encryption

Hi,

PPTP protocol sessions are generally encrypted using Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE) which is RSA-RC4. Key lengths are 40, 56 or 128bit (from memory).

IPSec/L2TP certainly does offer more options.

I believe that Windows 7 can act as a IPSec/L2TP server, but not sure whether this is restricted to certain versions.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Mark
