will be receiving my iPhone 10 tomorrow. Seen where they added smart colors to iOS 11 but it still looks off does anyone know when they will fix that and make it an actual dark mode. Or maybe just a dark iMessage.

Apple doesn't seem interested in a dark mode of any kind.

It's too bad since it'd be easy enough to implement with the ambient light sensor.

Using iOS in the dark absolutely requires using 'Invert Colors' (via the Triple-click Home shortcut), or my eyes would burn right up.

Seems like the "when" in that title should really be "if".

I would say that the smart colors, is a start to make Apps developers support it. There is no magic way Apple can control a generel dark mode, without each individual Apps being prepared for it. A way to speed it up, is just like they did with 64bits and make dark mode/Smart colors support an requirement for submissions to app-store.

True Tone and Night Shift do the trick for me. The display is actually too dark for me at night at times.

I’m with you.

Particularly now that Apple have OLED screens with the introduction of the iPhone X, it’s madness that they don’t have a system wide Dark Mode.

It makes them look like amateurs, as Android has had it for years.

After only 1 day on iOS 11 (I had another unrelated issue keeping me on iOS 10 until yesterday) I’m using the normal mode mainly during the day, Smart Invert via the Control Center in the evening and then Night Shift as I go to bed.

Apple claims to be all about the Customer Experience, well mine is a poor one.

With a well implemented system wide Dark Mode, alongside a kit for developers to update their apps, I’d have it enabled 24/7.

If it just a matter of lowering the brightness below minimum, there is 2 ways to achieve that in settings->general->Accessibility
1. Enable zoom mode and select low light filter
2. Reduce White point in display accommodations
No. 2 can be fine-tuned with a slider
Both of them can be enabled by the accessibility short-cut, so you can quickly toggle. (3 times on the home button, don't know how it has been mapped on IP-X )

I’ve thought the same thing. There’s a reason why they make smart Invert Colors.
Edit : Just noticed something weird with SIC.
First I switch to SIC then take screenshots it produces the “white background one” while on display it’s showing as “black background one”

Shame they don't see how beneficial that really is to OLED screens. Having a dark mode or ability to have a darker theme would do wonders for battery life.

I know it does for Android devices. So much white on iOS!

If I had to guess I would say its going to be one of the main features announced for iOS 12... I see a lot of 3rd party apps are starting to implement a true black dark theme, not just a dark theme that looks gray. like overcast and the reddit app for example.

Or set night shift for a certain time which also works.

Night shift isn't nearly as easy on the eyes as using a black background. I can physically feel my eyes relax when I invert the colors in apps like Messages.

Also, I leave NightShift on at all times to warm the screen tone. It tends to be easier on the eyes in most situations.
