anyone leave verizon for the iphone....

Yes I left Verizon after 9+ years of service with them. They have an excellent network, probably the best in my opinion for at least where I live. You're right with the phones...not the best. I've had various smartphones with them and their EVDO network is fast but the lack of a full HTML browser and lack of compatibility with my Mac was my main reason for switching to the iPhone 3G. Also, Mac has the best software platform on the market in my opinion.
AT&T's service isn't the best where I'm located but when I go elsewhere the 3G connection is great. It's a downgrade in network, but all the cool applications, the seem less compatibility, and cheaper data packages make the switch worthwhile.

Same thing with me, but with Sprint. I was on a much cheaper plan, but yeah... my friend had a good point. "What's the point of the cheaper plan, if you don't have a phone that can use it?" (it had unlimited data)
We were in the Sprint store tonight to have my girlfriend's phone looked at, I overheard another couple.. the wife told her husband "I don't like a single phone in this store."

I left Verizon back in March for the iPhone. I had Verizon for about six years, and for the most part didn't have any troubles until the end.
I had a Treo 750, but it was dying on me fast. Restarting during phone calls, locking up, etc... I went in to the Verizon shop thinking I would be walking out with a CrapBerry, but they weren't helpful in the least! They wouldn't give me any sort of discount on the phone, so I was going to have to pay the full $475 on a new phone!
I told them there was no way I would do that when an iPhone was $400. Three days later I had an iPhone.

This has been my experience:
Verizon:
-Better reception where I live.
-IMO better customer service.
-Know a lot more people with their service (M2M)
AT&T:
-Much better phones.
-Rollover minutes. (I really like the idea of this.)
-Best 3g coverage.
-Iphone

Yep. I was with Verizon for what would have been eleven years this September, and I had no complaints. I knew too many horror stories about AT&T to switch to the iPhone last year, but once 3G was announced, I decided to take the plunge. I'm actually only one town away from FujiApple20; I live in Long Beach, and 3G service is stellar everywhere I go around here (keeping in mind I've only had the phone for 6 days), from Burbank to south Orange County. Anyway, I had great service and coverage from Verizon, and used the Palm OS for over ten years as well, first stand-alone PDAs and then Treos, but that had seriously stagnated, so I was really salivating over the iPhone. A Blackberry isn't an option for me, especially when I need 100% Mac compatibility. No, Palm didn't have that either, but it is light-years ahead of the BB.
I've been pleasantly surprised at how great the call aspect is so far. NO dropped calls (unlike my friends' non-3G AT&T phones), very clear reception, etc.
I love the rollover aspect as well. I have months when I'm pushing the boundaries of my plan, and other months where I'm hardly on the phone, so rollover is a great thing for me. I had verizon practically since I had a cell phone. I switched to the iPhone and an glad I did. Though my service isn't "as good" I still get bars in most places and love the iPhone

I was with Verizon for over 10 years, but was growing more an more frustrated with their lame, locked down phones. After walking into a store and trying the LG Voyager when it came out, I decided I was waiting for an update to the iPhone, and switching then. Even after that, I went back and tried out the Dare knowing I would be waiting on line for an iPhone a few days later. I just hate the LG interface. I didn't find it to be responsive. It was unintuitive. The browser is a joke. So that settled it for me.
I live in northern NJ and have had good 3G coverage on AT&T. And I'm waaaayyyyyy happier with the iPhone than I ever was with any new phone I got from Verizon.
Still, I think when it comes to network and customer service, I'm going to find Verizon was better. I think the iPhone is AT&T exclusive for 3 more years. So in 2 years I'll buy the new version (4th generation iPhone) and lock into another 2 yrs with AT&T. After that, my hope is that with Verizon opening up their network, they'll get a version of the iPhone the following year, and when I'm due for a renewal, I can switch back to Verizon for the 6th generation iPhone (2nd generation on Verizon).
