I will lose an Album design program called Pixellu Smart Album 2, which I need states will not work with Big sur.. I am very happy with the existing program and do not need the stinking subscription version..

Also I run Parallels 15 and I need this for my Accounting program, which runs on windows. So they are saying I need to buy version 16, but I see that the program is also has bugs for the network..

Now I cant update my iPhones because they are forcing my to update to Big Sur!

You know what you can do Apple communists dont you ????

haha, what? this is a constant in the world of OSes, that often, a new OS will have new requirements; then it's up to the developer to update their apps (or not); and then, finally, it's your choice to update your apps (or not).

i hear you about subscriptions... but it's not apple's fault that the developer has moved to that kind of plan.

if you choose not to update your apps, that's your choice. nothing to do with apple, or communism...

Just to be clear nobody is forcing you to upgrade to Big Sur.

Smart Albums 2020 is working fine for me without any issues.

Also you don’t need to be on Big Sur to update your iPhones, what about all the people that don’t have Macs or PCs?

if it’s not the right time for you don’t upgrade. If you need a specific app hold off until the developer updates it, that’s not Apples issue.

No one is forcing you to upgrade to Big Sur, but you might be up for some trouble if you don't.

I wanted to wait on the Catalina upgrade because I depended on a 32-bit program that wasn't yet updated. It was only 2 months after the Catalina release.

My Mac was still under Apple Care and I was having an issue with Time Machine. Apple Care would not provide support unless I upgraded to Catalina. It's a matter of semantics whether Apple was forcing me to upgrade.

I've yet to upgrade to Big Sur on my main computer. The App Store is constantly mixing together the apps that can be updated with those that cannot; I'm alerted constantly to new versions of Apple Remote Desktop and GarageBand, but they really aren't really available to me. The same is (somewhat) true of Software Update in System Preferences. Apple makes it unpleasant if you don't update - or at least they don't care if they accidentally do.

Apple Remote Desktop on Catalina has intermittent problem waking my other Mac which has been upgraded to Big Sur. Likely, Apple didn't work too hard having the two OS's interoperate in this fashion. They certainly did release a new Apple Remote Desktop, but as I said above, the new version is not available to me on Catalina.

Apple pushes really hard to get you to upgrade quickly and I feel unreasonably so.

I updated very shortly after Big Sur was released on my main machine and have yet to experience any major issues. I do quite a bit of music production and only a few of my less important programs have proved non-functional. Other apps say they won't work on Big Sur yet, but they still do nonetheless. That said, I did hold off on Catalina last year given how buggy it was till about 10.15.6 lol. Anyways, I'd say I think you're safe to go ahead and update to Big Sur. It took me a minute but now I have gotten very used to the new UI and can honestly say that I find it aesthetically pleasing. Good luck with whatever decision you go with!

I have smart albums 2 and I dont need to buy the 2020 version other than for it to work on Big Sur. I back up my phone on the mac and when I hooked the phone up it said I needed Big Sur to update the phone.. If I update it through its wifi connection, will it still connect to the mac?

To answer the OP's question,

To date, I have not updated from High Sierra to either Catalina, Mojave or Big Sur mainly because Apple removed Cover Flow from the Finder. In addition, I have not been tempted to upgrade from a "working" OS for Apple's eye candy UI and other changes in subsequent OS's.

However, I plan to update to Big Sur with a Parallels High Sierra VM once it is validated that both Parallels and Carbon Copy Cloner have no Big Sur issues. Unfortunately, there are some of my software packages that can no longer be upgraded from H.S. and that forces this action.

I stayed on Mojave until 2 days ago. Catalina gave me issues and I didn't want to lose Parallels 10. P10 was the last version to allow large VM's without the subscription model. Staying on Mojave did have it's issues with security updates and app updates. To get around the lose of P10, I moved over to VMware. VMware is working great with Big Sur and at least for me, Big Sur is more stable with networking than Catalina.

There's an app I use where the 64-bit version requires a new licence. I already have multiple licences for the 32-bit version which mostly works very well. The 64-bit version is getting better but needs more time to mature.

Another app I have a perpetual licence for a 32-bit version of a software and yet despite having a perpetual licence it'll stop working mid-2021 so at that point (if not earlier) I may move to using Mojave. I don't like the subscription model. Much easier for budgeting to pay once and then upgrade to a new version when it suits me and not need to think about ongoing payments.

I'm still on High Sierra (and El Capitan on machines that don't support High Sierra). Only my main Mac supports running anything newer than High Sierra.
