As the title states, I'm considering picking one up to compliment my 15" 460 MacBook. WoW and LoL are really the only 2 games I play and was wondering how the new GPU is handling MacOS WoW in 5k if anyone has tested it. My MBP plays it pretty well with most settings on ultra but that's at 2880x1800. The iMac has a more powerful GPU but it's also pushing more pixels, so I'm just curious.

I bet your MBP does not play WoW at 2880x1800 on all Ultra settings unless your render scale is 50% because you definetely won't get that at 100% and even with 50% I'm not sure you can get totally playable frame rates but I could be wrong. Anyways on the new iMac it's absolutely fantastic. Gaming either at 1440p or 5k the game looks incredible. Head on over to the WoW forums and there is people talking about it.

Changing to 100% render scale is one of the first things I did, it was incredibly obvious. I did have to change shadows to low to keep it playable, but shadows have always been a performance killer for WoW. In pre-legion zones I keep a consistent 60 fps with dips down to 45 or so. In Legion zones it does take a big hit, normally staying around 30-40, with dips into the low 20's. I've since dropped the settings because I prefer higher FPS versus the eye candy. Thanks for the info though, I'm gonna see what I can find on the WoW forums!

I'm glad to hear that most of the settings are set to Ultra though and just a couple settings are turned down but overall that is awesome. I played WoW on my 2013 rMBP with the GT 650M on 2880x1800 on all low settings and was playable for awhile but now it's just not anymore which led me to buying the iMac. I can tell you playing WoW at 5k on this panel is like godlike lol.

I've played wow at 1440p on the 580 with all settings one of maximum and the lowest FPS I witnessed was a brief drop into the 50's in busy areas. Performance on the whole was excellent at that resolution and the image was sharp. 5k on the other hand was not worth the loss of performance. The 100c CPU spikes on the i7 which caused the fan to rev up that was the only negative to take from the experience, it might be worth going with the i5.

Doesn't it look terrible in 1440p? If I drop down to half res on my MBP to 1440x900, it's a mess.

:p The real question is can I play a 13 year old Half Life 2 on it at 5k with ultra settings and the antialiasing and the anisotropic filtering?

I know even the m295x had some issues with the antialiasing/anisotropic but could handle everything else.
