That's my current machine. Think I might need to replace it. What did you go for and how was it?

What features or connectivity are you looking for?

To be honest I'm quite happy with what I have now. I really don't do much on it that's considered demanding, but even when I do it still holds up. Like I've made a few 5 minute videos using FCPX with 1080p footage and it was surprisingly smooth, to the point where creating proxies wasn't even required!

What I mainly want is less weight, smaller size while still retaining the same screen size (so smaller bezels and thinner essentially) and better battery life. Also more reliability. A while ago I suddenly all at once got all the problems my gen of MBP is known to suffer from- stuck keys, screen banding, and webcam not work (last two related- flexgate). Fortunately it was all replaced for free, but a few weeks ago my webcam stopped working. Screen is fine at the moment, but considering the screen problem is caused to by the same thing that affects the webcam, it might be a matter of time before my screen goes. And AFAIK, the 2016 MBP flexgate free repair program has expired.

So in terms of use case, size and weight the M2 Air is looking mighty attractive. I'm a bit apprehensive about reliability though given the glass cracking issues of the M1 Air. Although since the M2 is a new design, it won't necessarily have that problem.

Then again, it might be worth waiting for the 3nm stuff next year. I assume that will be a big improvement.

So I don't know really lol, kind of fun just chatting about this stuff!!

I am not familiar with the 2015 MacBook Pro's overall connectivity. However, I will suggest you do look at the M2 13" MacBook Pro. The Air is passively cooled and currently suffers from throttling under certain workloads.

We know the M2 is a hotter chip than the M1 due to the power graphs, so this has to be taken into account. As per weight and size, the 13" is quite similar, a tad heavier if anything.

You won't suffer flexgate or butterfly-gate here as those are either resolved issues or regressed to the old key mechanism.

I owned a 2016 non-TB MBP, but got rid of it in 2019. I currently have an M1 Air, and a 14" M1 Pro. They are both amazing in comparison to the 2016.

Minor correction, sorry, it's the 2016 model I have.

Yeah that's the thing, M1 fanless seems OK. Watched a few videos comparing it to the M1 13" Pro and the sustained performance wasn't that far off. M2 with its higher wattage will run hotter. Obviously it will be still be very fast, but I wouldn't feel happy knowing it was having to throttle.

But the M2 Pro has the old design, no upgraded webcam, no upgraded speakers, no magsafe, no high-impedence jack, plus it has the touchbar which I don't like.

So perhaps I'll wait out till next year.

The old design has nothing wrong with it. In fact I'd day it's tried and tested thoroughly. As per MagSafe that's one bummer. The High-Impedance jack and Speakers I would say are specific cases or moot points if you use AirPods.

As per Touch Bar, it's an acquired taste.

Nothing wrong with the old design except for that I have the same design and the new design is, well, newer lol. It's exciting to get something with a new design right? And besides, I like it.

I don't use airpods (or other TWS headphones for that matter) all of time lol so the speaker and jack upgrade will be welcome.

Understandable. Me personally, I dislike the new design. I feel it's a return to an era long gone instead of a new leap in design.

Ahhh, well, then it makes sense to want the high impedance.

It still kind of wish they made something the size of the rMB. Same overall dimensions, but make the bezels super thin and the screen bigger. Cut out some of the cores of the M1 to give it a more reasonable TDP for the chassis, fix the keyboard and call it a day. It'll still perform great and be so portable.
