I want to buy a mac pro, but the software I'll use runs only on windows. How is the performance running windows, does it go like it's supposed based on its hardware? are the drivers properly optimized?

yes

and it flies.

I only have a MP 3,1, but its performance on bootcamp is impressive.

Anyone running Windows 8?

I am a big fan of my Windows 8.0 on my 500GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD, booting from the SATA-3 PCIe Apricorn Velocity DUO x2.

It really flies, but be aware to kill the auto update feature as soon as you clean installed it. Especially when running PC GPU's. I check my updates manually so I can skip these awfull bad stock drivers in Windows 8.x for ie my GTX 670 4GB.

The bootcamp drivers are all working properly for my cMP 5.1.

Good luck chosing! There are many threads here on MR with good tutorials for installation.

Cheers

I actually had problems recently when I tried to use Windows 7 in Bootcamp on Yosemite (MacPro5,1). Windows would constantly bluescreen. I tried 8 and had no problems.

I have W8.1 on a HDD for my 5,1 that I don't use very often but it runs great. I was running W8.1 on a 960GB Crucial M500 connected to an Apricorn Vel Duo x2 along with an M500 for Yosemite. That also worked very good.

I moved the SSD to my mini 2.3 quad and the same Windows install works equally well after a few changes (Windows key, Office 2010 key, PS CS6 key, computer name change, etc).

is it possible to install windows 8.1 on a 2010 mac pro...how about windows 10 in the future?

That should NOT be a problem at all to imstall Windows 8.1!

ATM i have Windows 10 TP 10041 installed in a VM. Waiting for the final release to see how it works and if the bootcamp assistant will support it and provide the correct drivers.

Cheers

You did not specify buying which MP, nMP or cMP? If you are buying nMP (Late 2013 MP), you probably need to read this thread about people having issues installing Windows 8/8.1. Not sure if the issue has been solved by the new Boot Camp updates since I do not own one.
