I finally decided to get a 8k TV to use as a high res monitor for work. After a bunch of screwing around of upgrading firmware and drivers, i finally managed to get my PC to drive it at 7680x4320x60hz using a a display port to hdmi 2.1 adapter. That satisfies my work need, though was wondering if i could also use it at high res on my personal mac.

Seems like my 16" M1 Max refuses to show a resolution past 4096x2160, even at low refresh rates. I tried using a usb-c to hdmi 2.1 adapter since the hdmi port is limitted to 2.0, but no luck. I know the graphics can go to at least 5120x2160x60hz -- old LG 34" does through displayport/thunderbolt, and was hoping maybe i could pull off a 6k resolution or something similar.

Has anyone managed to get beyond 5k out of a M1 MAX, especially through a single hdmi interface? It seems like no from the searching i've done, but was holding out hope I missed something.

Thanks!

Don't know about HDMI, but all M1 Macs should be able to drive 6k (aka at the very least Apple claims compatibility with their own 6k monitor) via Thunderbolt. I would think if each individual part of the chain (aka USB-C to HDMI adapter and HDMI cable) can push the required bandwidth, then it should work, but I am no expert here. Have you tried SwitchResX? You might be able to force some additional resolutions.

Oh, yeah, good point about the 6K. So the hardware can definitely go further resoltuons.

Unfortunately it appears that switchresx is incapable of making anything other than scaled resolutions for the M1 machines. I haven't tried it but read the info on their website stating this. :(
