I look at Steam every so often to check out what games come to Mac and I saw this game Endless Space.

Has anyone played it? Seems like a pretty deep strategy challenge.

Finally, a thread I actually know something about.

Yes, I purchased Endless Space when it was in the beta. If, like me, you liked Gal Civ, Master of Orion, Stars! and other turn-based space 4X type games, Endless Space will likely give you a few hours of fun.

I haven't played it in a few weeks (life getting in the way of gaming), but I enjoyed it when I did. It certainly is nice to look at, design wise. Very simple, elegant even. The AI certainly gave me a good run for my money, though, in the version I played, I found that, overall, the game did not allow much flexibility for different strategies, so games tended to feel the same after a while.

I think that, if you are a patient gamer who enjoys longer, strategy-oriented games, you would enjoy ES. I can't speak to Multiplayer, since I didn't try it. Also, I would say that you should try it if you get a chance as the developers are clearly very interested in improving their game and I would expect that the current version of the game is probably much improved over the version I played last.

I just purchased the game based on this thread, so I'll give it a try later and see how it goes.

Well let us know what you thought of it! I wish there were demand for games like this.

I haven't played the Mac version yet, but last time I sunk some time into it on my PC I clearly enjoyed myself. It's pretty much how you'd expect these type of games to go - "Just one more turn" easily changes into "Damn, I am supposed to get up in 3 hours!". If you enjoyed Master Of Orion 2, Ascendancy or GalCiv2, Endless Space is the game for you.

The one thing it gets criticized for the most is the combat which takes away a lot of micro management from you. Battles are divided into three distinct phases in which you can select a special card/power and throw it at your opponent (or yourself it's a Repair card for example). Some cards cancel out others at the same time, so there is still some rock-paper-scissoring involved. You also get new cards further down the tech tree.

One of the things I like most is how they brought back star lanes from Ascendancy. There still is a tech to freely travel between star systems but you will have to research that first.

Also, the UI is absolutely sexy.

I like the fact its turned based - I did not like Sins of a Solar Empire.

Thanks for the sale link, I will check it out.

I love this game.

I am straight up addicted to this game. I've played over a thousand hours so far. I have the expansion, Endless Space: Disharmony. So far I've been able to beat it on the Hard difficulty level.

I'm a big fan of Master of Orion 1 and Master of Orion 2 so this game feels just like home.
