anyone try quark on a new macintel?

Yes. On a 17" model. Seems to run fine... well as fine as Quark 6.x does.
Quark 7 out in about weeks... allegedly.
Universal Binary too.

I run it on my imac and macbook pro, both with stock ram. It runs pretty well actually. much better than CS2.

I hope Quark Dies. It's not as intuitive as InDesign, lacks the cohesion of the Adobe Apps and just isnt as easy to use as Freehand.
It just isnt that great a program anymore. Too bad so many people still use it!!!
If you live in the Gulf Coast (louisiana / Texas) area, ill happily teach you Indesign, or Freehand (although it will probably be phased out) for a nominal fee.

Besides, Quark still holds a majority market-share and so is a valuable tool to learn and use...

Speaking from a prepress department perspective, Quark is a big pain. It's a rare Quark document that doesn't cause problems. I don't mean customers faults. I'm referring to software issues.
Speaking from a consumer perspective, Quark's success forces Adobe to keep innovating and improving InDesign. I evangelize InDesign every chance I get, but Quark keeps Adobe hopping.

Quark is so out of date. It's so old and ugh. I can't even imagine! lol
InDesign is so fresh.
Live long InDesign. It's a lot better than Quark, though. So I'd rather wait for CS3 come out to mactel.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm very well versed in both programs.
The project that I happen to be working on was created in Quark many years ago. I don't think it'd be necessary to switch it from one program to the next.
I howerver, still like Quark. It's home for me. Although InDesign is nice and fresh, there's still a little soft spot for Quark in my heart.
Quark takes ages to save

I'm brand new to Mac Rumours and I've been having a good furtle round the site.
I note that this thread is quite old but I wondered if anyone else has found Quark 7.1 to be very, very slow when it comes to saving a file? And how large the file gets if you have a good few images in it?
Or is it just me? Is there a way to speed things up?
I used to set Quark to automatically save every 10 mins but I've had to stop that now - it was taking several minutes and was very embarrassing if I was taking corrections over the phone - having to suspend work while Quark clunked and wheezed.
I have a Mac Intel Pro with loads of RAM and was hoping things would speed up rather than slow down

I was shocked when I recieved a client ad in QXP4.0 that crashed QXP7.1 EVERY time I tried to open it. Wouldn't you know, I was able to open the exact same file in InDesign2.0. That right there is a testament to InDesign. I was ALWAYS a Quark fan and evangelist, but after switching to InDesign I've never looked back. Having the ability to use QXP shortcuts in ID2...PRICELESS!

I believe that you are referring to Indesign CS2 which is (4.0), not 2.0.

Quark 7 on G5
not sure about MacIntel but Quark runs fine on my G5 since it updated to 7.1 as I had plenty of hassle with 7.02 and its running speed which included not liking text boxes yes text boxes!
Most people still using Quark here, mainly because of it being home for us and the thought of introducing InDesign on live jobs is too scary have ID, but dont use it.
Main gripe about Quark 7 is that the shadows are to subtle, biggest plus is transparencies, even though some have banned it because of overuse!
Biggest impact on upgrade to 7 is the necessary upgrade to Apples Tiger, not much advancement but major problems with backward compatabilities to other older Macs and problems printing to laser printers etc.

We're waiting for Leopard and Adobe CS3; still on Panther and CS1... Quark 7 for our main machines is sitting in boxes on the shelf as I haven't got round to consolidating our licenses into a site license yet. I also wanted to make sure Quark 7.1 was out as well, although I think there will also be a 7.2, if not a 7.5.
Also think this might be a good opportunity to ditch Suitcase XI and maybe take up FontXplorer, saving some money in the process. We're an in-house corporate outfit, so extensive and frequent font management is not a huge concern. We only deal with 6 or so families for the most part, all of them stored locally on each machine.
Our main machines are dual 2.5 G5s BTW, with 2.5gb RAM each, going up to 3.5gb each when we get CS3 in... oh, and new monitors too.

BV, now you have reminded me, Suitcase XI does not work well on Tiger opens hundreds of fonts that are not activated and struggles when opening more fonts that you do need, slowing everything down. I have been meaning to resolve this for ages, time restraints and all that. Speaking of time, I have purhased a copy of Quark Interactive Designer which arrived over a week ago still not had time to open the packaging thank F its friday!!

Running OK on Tiger here at home from where I'm (half-heartedly) working today, although I've only got 120 fonts managed through it but with thousands on the machine.
Anyway, I've come to hate Extensis over the years; their crap site, their insistence on registering to obtain even small updates, their general all-round suckiness...
And yeah, we'll be getting Interactive Designer as well. We've got a lot of simple Quark content already created and archived that needs quick repurposing for Flash presentations for our plasma at reception.

*a bug bear of mine when will the world realise that just because you have a computer it doesnt mean you know how to design or create artwork, AND, just because you have a digital camera it doesnt mean you are a photographer gggrrrrr.

Switching to my intel mac effectively ended my Quark days. I have 3 Quark 4.1 licenses left from a company I worked for that went bankrupt, and am not in the least inclined to try the arduous task of officially transferring the licenses to my name to upgrade to 6.x. I would only talk to their sales staff if I was paid to.
For new licenses, Indesign is given away when you need buy Photoshop and Illustrator, so why would anyone spend another $1500 CDN simply to buy an inferior application that should be left in the 90s.
BTW, I've also been using Suitcase X1 with Tiger, on both PPC and intel boxes, with no problems.
