Anyone updated still running SL 10.6.8?

Very confused

Just updated to iOS9 using this version of iTunes, then this comes up after the phone has been updated to latest OS.

But...?

Is this because I'm running 10.6.8 still and you need a higher OS to run the latest iTunes?

So what do I do? How do I revert back to when iTunes could update my phone without a problem. This is ridiculous! I can't get to my old backups now. Apple need a slap

For the immediate future you should be able to revert your iPhone back to 8.4.1 so long as Apple is still signing it.

You'll need to do a few things. Firstly,

Download the appropriate IPSW for your device. You can find it by googling the model (I.E iPhone 5 GSM iOS 8.4.1 IPSW)
Plug your phone into the computer
Put the phone into DFU mode. Again, plenty of tutorials on Google.
In iTunes hold down either OPTION or the symbol on your keyboard while clicking on the "restore" button and locate the directory of the IPSW.
Let the phone "restore" itself back down to 8.4.1.
You should now be able to use your latest backup and the phone will be as it was before you updated to iOS 9.

As long as the backup file you're going to be using was from the same phone then it should work without a hitch. The only time this becomes a problem is if you had backed up a phone on iOS 9 and wanted to revert to a previous version of IOS and tried to restore using that backup from iOS 9. Then you'd run into backwards compatibility issues where iTunes would throw a popup error saying the backup requires iOS 9.

It should be. Once the restore is complete iTunes will ask if you want to setup as a new phone or restore from a backup. It'll be the same process had you of updated from 8.3 to 8.4.1; only you're jumping through some hoops instead of just hitting an update button.

It's pretty weird practise. So if I bought a new 6S I couldn't actually restore my back up now in iTunes unless I upgraded my OS on my MacBook because I can't get current iTunes. That's quite incredible really. Apple should have warned people on Snow Leopard before they updated to ios9 that they won't be able to use their phone in iTunes again. And if you buy an iPhone and don't have latest OS, you've had it. Thanks again for your help.

An iTunes version checker before the update process starts would definitely save a lot of headache. P.S, After you downgrade your iPhone back to 8.4.1 I'd recommend letting it backup through iCloud instead of your local computer. That way when you do purchase a new phone you'll be guaranteed that your information will sync.

Also like to add that despite my disgust for Apple not warning Snow Leopard die hards that you can't update or restore your phone again when you update to '9', and probably won't be able to update your iPods either shortly, that this iOS is not as reliable as the last one. I never had a problem with the fingerprint scanner in the last couple of iOS and now it's not working properly, and the sliding home screens have frozen several times too and won't go back to the home screen. Again it's happened several times in the last 10 hours since update.

Plus the iCloud back up hasn't exactly had great press in the last year for safety. And many won't use it. So iTunes was our only hope.
