I got the M1 MacBook Prow with 16 Gig RAM a few years ago and now I am considering upgrading to MacBook Pro M3 Pro, reasons for Pro instead of regular M3:
- Get 18 gig RAM
- Battery can always be replaced if it deteriorates while the processor won't, nor RAM so hence I would only consider M3 Pro.
- Seems a big graphic performance improvement going with M3 Pro.

Did a quick battery test at Best Buy and the M3 Pro indicated lasting an hour longer than regular M3. I stood for a long while to ensure same load, brightness etc and did it several times to ensure consistency.

I want to use for some XCode
Primarily for video editing and DJing
Garageband
General work, Office,
Like to have a lot of parallel activities
Photo editing and processing
Ruining Parallels VM

Will hand down M1 to family member that has a 2017 Macbook.

I really like my toouchbar but I expect less support for it in the future from apps.

Will I see a big difference? Interested to hear from people who did the same upgrade.

Thanks

Unfortunately, I can only compare M1 Pro 16" to the unbinned M3 Pro 14". The substantial increase in single-core performance you'll definitely notice, because even I do. Apps & websites load super quick. For my "pro" workflow, I can only compare to Logic Pro and there is a definite, if modest, improvement. The single core performance allows many of my projects to run smoother without clicks/pops--but M1 Pro was and is a great machine and still more than capable. If I didn't want a smaller form factor and the vanity of space black, there would be no need for the M3 Pro.

There are some reports that M3 Pro may actually run longer than regular M3. Today I haven't done anything heavy, but I've used the machine quite a bit. Activity monitor has the time on battery as almost 24 hours with another 3 hours remaining. Of course, I haven't been using the computer all day and I've been experimenting with lower power mode, so don't take this as the norm. However, this is without a doubt longer than my M1 Pro 16" with 89% battery capacity--which is a nice upgrade given the smaller battery.

Knowing your current rig, I'm sure the better screen, ports, etc. of the 14 in. will probably stand out more than anything.

Anyone else? I am now using my MBP 13 as my BYOD for work so I am hesitant to use it for games and running games and my photo and video projects so need a personal device. M3 Pro is really tempting as it would be supported for several years contrary to my old intel iMac that is already becoming quite slow.
Here are my use cases:
- Photo reviews and editing
- Video editing
- Games, BG3, Civ
- Coding (for hobby only) learning Swift.
- Music creation using Garageband connected to my electric piano.
- Normal stuff email, office, video calls etc.
- Running Windows VM using Parallels Desktop

Another question do you ever get used to the notch? It really bothers me but I read a tip to use a background and screen saver that is black at the top.

For me the M3 doesn't make sense so either M3 Pro (Max is too much) or trying to find a M2 MBP 13" or 13" Air M2. But I suspect the Air would be too weak.
I really appreciate any input!
