I have a 2014 iMac 27 with 4ghz I7, 512ssd, 24gb of ram. Ordering the MacBook 13, 16/512. Will trade in or sell the iMac. Will these be a pretty big jump?

Pretty big jump doing what tasks exactly? It will most certainly be fast. One thing to consider is you are going to be using a much smaller display. Most people handle going up in screen size but not so much the other way around. You could keep the iMac and use it as external display however.

Also, have you ever used a laptop before? They are very different than desktops in usage. Maybe the Mac mini might be an option. You plan on using it at a desk or taking it with you on the road a lot?

I am Djing more now so the MacBook would be better for me. Forgot you can use the iMac as an external monitor. May pair the keyboard and trackpad to the MacBook and use it as a monitor vs selling it. Then I’ll still have the iMac as a backup.

I have not been able to make my 2013 iMac as a target display from the M1.

Only the Intel Macbooks have I been able to do this - the M1 may be limiting it thru the Apple TB-TB2 adapter...

Ah good to know. Maybe an update. It’s just a bidirectional thunder bolt connection?

I upgraded from a late 2013 21.5" iMac.

I had replaced the the HDD with an SSD and upgraded the RAM to 16GB at the same time about 2 or 3 years ago on my iMac. However, the PSU on it is now failing. My iMac randomly turns off and can't be turned back on without unplugging it for five minutes and then holding the power button for 30 seconds while unplugged before plugging back in.

I decided to upgrade to a M1 MacBook Pro. It would have cost me $200 to $300 or so in parts to fix the iMac myself depending on which PSU I bought and my iMac is now to old to be supported as of Big Sur. No more OS updates. So I made the move to a M1 MBP with 16GB/1TB in Space Gray. Was lucky enough to find this config in store on launch day and pick one up.

I upgraded to a MBP 16G/1TB from a mid 2012 MBP with 8G/1TB. The performance jump was huge. I used the Apple migration tool to move everything over. So far, with the exception of Kindle, everything works fine and faster.

I too found the performance jump huge.

Applications launch much faster, almost instantaneous. The Photoshop Beta launches in 2 seconds flat!

Everything seems to run faster. Browsing the web with Chrome has seen a huge increase in speed as well.

For many tasks, I have even noticed the performance jump when comparing to my Work Provided 2019 15" MBP.

Other than when I was running Cinebench, I have not noticed the fan kicking on yet in my new M1 MBP.
