Heaven or Hell
does anyone use Globat.com web hosting ? i am looking for a new
web host and they offer 1 TeraByte for 7 us dollars per month....

seems like a good deal... ?

I never heard of them before.

However, will you ever need 1TB of disk space?

Other that than, their offering is not better in terms of price/features than number of other hosting companies.
Brief check of GoDaddy site tells that GoDaddy offers Deluxe hosting with 1TB bandwidth, unlimited domains hosted (as opposed to 10 at Globat) for less than $7 a month and discounts if you sign for longer.

You should base your decision on the purpose of the site and than find the best product. For example, hosting personal blog does not require 1TB of anything :)

I personally host my sites at ASO (A Small Orange), it has lower bandwidth and disk space but superb service and flexibility.

wow, i've never heard that web crawlers can steal files from a web server?

even if they are 20 MB RAW files ?

anyone else have a different opinion
about backing up your stuff on your web server ?

thanks! FF

Never, ever again.

One word. Collections.

They told me to cancel my domains before they were automatically renewed. I sent numerous emails to their billing center canceling the renewal of my names of which they said was fine. Then I kept getting emails from them about a month later saying that if I didn't renew I would be charged a 30 dollar fee (they were trying to renew my names but my credit card had expired so they kept getting declined, I'm glad they did) . I went to their live support and asked them about this and the guy said I shouldn't worry since I canceled them already and that they send those to everyone. So I ignored the emails and then a month later the collections calls started coming in 2 times a day everyday during my classes. The calls were confusing in mis leading. Each collector would give me a different story and when I would call back they would tell me they don't know why I'm calling because I have no open complaints with them. I got some legal help and it turns out since I was 15 the contract was void so they had nothing to go on. Collections didn't care how old I was, but I sent a letter to Globat and I never heard from collections again. One thing is for sure I'm never using them again. If you google "globat collections", you'll see tons of horror stories.

Anyways any company offering that much space usually has a policy like all content must be used in correlation with the site you have and it cannot be used as a file hosting site.

thanks for the heads up about Globat .com!
Good thing i didn't go with them yet...

I am now thinking about going with Dreamhost.com

Any Experiences with them ?

I've had a ton of friends who used Dreamhost. Whats so great about them is their honesty when it comes to overselling (we all know no one except for google can offer exorbitant amounts of space without over selling). It would be great if you could find a coupon code for them. They can get pretty cheap.

I looked at dreamhoasting and it looks great but it just seems a lot better than what i have now for the same money and the warning bells ring when i look at the TB's of bandwidth and GB's of storage. Ruby on rails support interests me too but how do they manage to make it so cheep and how is there uptime.

I use dreamhosting, I've only had it for a month- but there have been no problems whatsoever with them.

Dreamhost is acceptable - but you get what you pay for

I've been using Dreamhost for about a year. If you want SSH access, unlimited domains, subdomains, and email aliases (I think you're limited to "only" 3000 full email accounts), it is the place to be. It is not 100% reliable, and the bandwidth is about T1 (150kb/sec), but for $7 - $10 a month, you shouldn't expect it to be much more than that. I don't think any provider offers as much flexibility and control for the money.

They also offer a service called "Files Forever" - $3 per GB; a one-time payment for "permanent" (according to them) secure storage of your files.

If you'd rather skip that, just put your files into a directory not accessible to the web, SSH in (or use the WebFTP service) and do "chmod -R 700 *" (without quotes) and that should do the trick to keep the files private.

FTP is secure using an SFTP client. They also offer SSL IMAP PUSH accounts, which are great for secure email on a Treo (using ChatterEmail) - I have set up accounts on my work Blackberry and personal Treo, and the Treo always gets messages faster (granted, the Treo gets only 24 hrs. of battery life, but the email is faster).

Do a Google search for "dreamhost promo code" and you will find some really good deals, some as low as $3/month. http://www.google.com/search?q=dreamhost+promo+code

Hope this helps....

OK, this is too confusing! i am getting contradictory info from different people!
Some say it is safe to back up on a web server, if you take certain precautions, adn others say it is NOT!
What's up? i guess if you are smart enough, you can get things done properly......
