I have 3.0.1 and tethering working. If I upgrade to get MMS with 5.5 will that take away my tethering?

Yup, 3G on 3.0.1, un-jailbroken, carrier 5.5, tethering, MMS, and VVM all working.

Sorry to ask but did you actually test tethering or just look under network settings. It has been known to disappear when you go to use it after updates.

Thanks in advance.

I've never used my iPhone to tether. I have 3.0.1 and the 5.5 carrier file on my un-jailbroken phone as well.

Would you be so kind as to tell me how to tether? Is there anything that needs to be done on the phone itself?

What about on the PC? Do I need to download software from AT&T or do I just setup a new network connection manually in Windows? Are there certain settings I need if doing it manually?

Thanks!

Hello guinea pig.

Ok to enable tethering there were two methods. my favorite was to visit help.benm.at on you phone, tap mobile configs, tap usa, tap at&t, and tap install, and then click ok to the warning message. This installs the mobile config.

Next you need itunes install (at least if on windows for a network driver) or use bluetooth on a mac. Go to settings on your iphone, general, network, tethering, and turn it on. Your iphone needs to be connected to your pc or mac via the usb cable or you can enable bluetooth pairing and just set it up like a modem.

Search the forums for benm or michaeljohnston hack if you need more help.

Please post back if it works for you. Thanks.

Yep, I have 3.01 with MMS working. I am actually typing on my Macbook Pro tethered right now...

better yet, is anyone using 3.1 (rather than 3.0.1) and have tethering working? My tethering option disappeared once I tried to connect my laptop... hoping for a new hack soon, as I'll be traveling early next month and want it while on the road

How did you manage to do it? I had tethering work with the hacked 5.1 .ipcc, but ever since the 5.5 .ipcc came out, I could no longer MMS, so I had to ditch my trusted 5.1 in order to get MMS, downside is I lost tethering....

Control-clicked in iTunes, selected the 5.5 .ipcc, and hit ok. As soon as it was done, I got the 'new voicemail' sound.

Ok, i took the plunge. Running 3.0.1 with carrier 5.5. Tethering, MMS and VVM working for me. All tested (have another iphone here) on 3GS and 3G phones.

Using benm for tethering here fyi.

Data transfer seems to be a little more snappy with new carrier file and tethering as well. Picutures, audio, video files, locations, and vcards all send nicely through mms as well. They do take much longer than an SMS to send in some cases.

Well, I decided to downgrade/upgrade the AT&T .ipcc whenever needed. After all, I just went back to 5.1 to get tethering

Edit - Somehow the 5.1 AT&T carrier .ipcc came back to life and MMS is in full swing, so now I have all 3 worlds back :D

Hmmm I have the option to send MMS but everytime I try I get a failure.

Ok, I have a 3GS, 3.0.1 OS, benm.at tethering hack, non jailbroken, carrier file 4.0. If I update to the new carrier file to get MMS, will it disable tethering and/or visual voice mail? Please let me know.

It seems like I still had the mms opt-out code on my account which probably was causing the problem. I'll need to reset my phone for a minute or two according to the rep - will post back here when that is done/

I'm using benm with 3.0 on my 3G and it still works after updating the carrier file from AT&T to enable MMS. And I did test tethering as well and it does work.

I installed the mobile config and rebooted my phone but I still dont see tethering in the network area on my phone...

How do you update the carrier file without updating the OS to 3.1?? I have 3.0.1 and still have the 4.0 carrier file.
