Anyone using 38mm bands on their 42mm watches?

I want to get my wife the Coach tea rose applique leather strap which only comes in 38mm but she has and loves a 42mm watch. I have attached a friends 38mm band on to my 42mm watch and it seems to be very secure.

So does any have any long-term experience doing this? Any issues?

Also, doesn't the edges of the parts that connect to the watch stick out a little?

I have a 38mm watch, and i have three 38mm bands and three 42mm bands (i'm preparing to upgrade to a 42mm when the next gen watch is released, so any other band purchases from now on will be 42mm sized), so, it really does stand out that they're not the right size for the watch....But it's a sacrifice i'm making for the moment til i can upgrade!
