With the release of the new version of Mail y want to give it a try.
I configure my gmail account as an IMAP default account with the assistant but I have one big problem.

If I delete or move to important folder a mail on Mail App... when I go to the web version of gmail and the mail isn't affected.

I know that in the past, Mail had a lot of problems on Mavericks.

Is there any special configuration to make it work?

The issue isn't with OS X as much as Google using a customized IMAP implementation on their end. Not sure Apple can make fixes on their end due to that implementation...

a lot of other mail programs have gotten Gmail right. Sparrow was a great example, it was so good that Google bought them and they stopped supporting their application.

Apple just doesn't seem to be able to get Gmail right. Granted I haven't tried mail in Yosemite yet.

To pinpoint the issue: if Apple Mail in 10.8.5 can be stable with Gmail IMAP, why can't they make it stable for 10.9 Mavericks and Yosemite?

People here try to excuse it as Google's IMAP conventions, but the fact is Apple Mail works great in Mountain Lion with Gmail IMAP.

Until I hear that Apple Mail has become rock solid with Gmail IMAP in Mavericks and Yosemite, I'm staying with Mountain Lion, even if that means not buying any new Mac computers.

That's interesting... I am using a gmail account on Yosemite and it is working perfectly and syncing perfectly with the website and my Android phone.

Mail, Gmail and Yosemite playing well until today

I switched from Mavericks to Yosemite because my problems between our Google enterprise email and Apple Mail never resolved on Mavericks. Yosemite solved the problem until today. I can send, but my Inbox is empty. Anyone else develop this problem overnight? Any ideas about what might be going on?

My gmail works like a charm with Yosemite Mail. Can't replicate any of the problems you people are having.

Not sure about Yosemite, but it seems to sync fine in Mavericks. I've been moving emails from an Exchange account to a folder in my gmail using Mail, and it works perfectly.

Just a suggestion for Gmail users. Prior to Mavs the recommendation was to turn off "All Mail" show in IMAP in the settings at gmail.com because it caused a second copy of every email to be on the Mac. That is no longer the case with Mavs. Go back to gmail.com and turn on show in IMAP for All Mail then relaunch Mail and leave it run a few hours to reindex everything.

Seems to help with these Gmail issues.

Weaselboy -- That was brilliant, thank you. Inbox restored. But, it does make me wonder why it was working without All Mail being checked on the Gmail side...

Spoke too soon

So, the emails that were in my Inbox before the hiccup with gmail/Yosemite appeared yesterday are there, but new emails only show up in the Archive folder in Mail. Any suggestions?

You might just wait a while. People have reported this reindex after All Mail is turned on can take hours.

Gmail in Mail for me has been working fine since Mavericks and now in Yosemite. No worries. Never used Sparrow or any other third party mail apps because I like to keep machine on the lean side. Mac's built in apps work really well in my opinion and have all the features I need.

One more Mail / Gmail issue

So today, my hard drive space started to disappear before my eyes. It went from 38 GB to 4.44 MB in minutes. I figured out that it was something to do with turning All Mail back on, so I deleted the Gmail account from Mail about 20 minutes ago and I'm inching back up to 38 GB of free disk space.

Weaselboy, you've been so helpful -- I'm not sure what my next step is. I already have Archive set not to show in IMAP, but when I enabled All Mail, the folder shows up in Mail.

Any ideas?

I would leave Archive checked to show as it won't take any more room anyway now with All Mail showing.

Try following this then let it reindex.

Do you have that many messages on Gmail that is could be using that much space? Another thing that can save space is this setting in the IMAP tab of settings at Gmail.com.

Don't expect any improvements with Yosemite

As far as I can tell Yosemite does nothing to improve my experience with Gmail or Google Apps Mail. Rich text emails come over as Plain Text and the formatting bar doesn't add any HTML to the headers. The Inbox comes up empty until I click in and out. Just a further degradation of the Apple experience if you ask me.

Yosemite link to send an email...want gmail not Mail

I never use Mail to send emails but after downloading Yosemite I get Mail when I click on a link to send an email. I would like to disable Mail on this Macbook air and have gmail pop up when I click on a link.

I know you guys are so smart about IMAP and all but if you respond please list the steps very clearly, like you are speaking to a 6 (rather than 63) year old.

And thanks for your help!
