This is something I wished OS X had ever since I started using it (from 10.6). However, now it's here it turns out I don't like it (I like seeing the focused app name, clock and other menu bar icons). I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts?

I only hide my Dock. Menu bar stays. I need it. I'm too used to seeing it and I like an at-a-glance look at things up there. It's not much up there, but meh.

I hide the menu bar & dock. I too like the clean look.

It's the animation I don't like. I want it to appear without scrolling down as that takes time and slows you down to be annoying.

I didn't like it at first, but I've been using it now, with everything in full screen and split views.

I was using it, but for some reason, the auto-hide menu bar causes Adobe InDesign to crash....not sure why but after I turn it off, InDesign runs fine.

i have a menu bar app to eject all my external drives. auto hiding the menu bar means i can't use it, as it disappears when i move my mouse away from the menu bar and over the drop down. so no hiding for me, right now.

Takes a bit of getting used to, but I prefer _both_ menu bar & dock hidden.

I like the extra screen space on rMBP 13"

I think it rewards you for persevering.

I don't like it. It means you need to go to the top of the screen, wait a second for the bar to show, and then you have access to menu items. Too much hassle.

I like a clean desktop so I hide both the menu bar and the dock (which only has 3 icons).

DS
I'm _only_ interested in a completely icon free desktop. I don't sit and admire my computer, it's the tool I earn a very good living with.

For me a plain solid color wallpaper and zero icons is desktop nerdvana. :D

Yeah same with rMBP 15". It feels like I got an extra inch from all the full screeness of EC.

+1. Though I can understand why some would prefer having a little extra space at the top of their screen, my menubar stays. After all it's what makes a Mac a Mac ;)

If Apple's going to spend time adding peculiar features, I'd rather see them add native support for Linux disk formats.

I keep Time, iTunes track, wifi status etc. on my menu bar. It annoyed me when I tried menu bar hiding, and that info became invisible until I did something to make it reappear.

Also I need to see things like time, fan speeds, Dropbox upload status. On Windows (let's not debate beyond this point) everything is down on the dock so they get away it better. Cheetah had those dock items too and if they still existed then hiding the menu bar would be less inconvenient.

i liked it on Windows but since i have an Mac now; i like both my dock and menu bar!!!

I can't seem to figure out how to unhide the menu bar. I'm running El Capitan and it seems to be hidden by default. Can anyone provide assistance?

Hi,

I have my dock & menu hidden and no desktop icons. Just like it that way.

I believe to unhide the menu bar you go-

desktop + click apple top left + system preferences + General + *Untick* 'Automatically show & hide and show the menu bar'

hope this helps

It might except for the fact that I have no such setting as "Automatically show & hide" the menu bar in my settings.

slightly pedantic but same thing, yes you are right it should say:

desktop + click apple top left + system preferences + General + *Untick* 'Automatically hide & show and show the menu bar'

basically the same thing but got the words mixed up, should work the same though.

El Cap 10.11.2

thanks very much for your help.
