Interested to hear some real-life experiences. Theoretically it should be possible, and at least Tempo are officially supported (bootability is not, but apparently doable via OpenFirmware trickery.)

What SSD make sense to get for such cards to get the max speed while not overpaying unnecessarily?

EDIT: I'm an idiot. I just re-read the title and realized you specifically said PCIe. Which is either a dual or quad core G5. Ignore me

I think it depends on the computer and the OS. I bought one of the generic 2 port cards on eBay. I was able to get my G3 mini-tower to boot OS9 from it. However, it didn't work when I installed a Rage 128 graphics card. Also, I was unable to get OS X to boot, but I think I found a workaround- I just have to find where I found it LOL

There is also a generic 4 port card that just works with OS X. Both cards use Seritek firmware (I'm pretty sure that was pirated).

In both OS X and Linux/Unix you can use a redirect or a helper drive you load the kernel and extensions from.

Once you have the extensions loaded into RAM for the SSD controller you can use that as the file system.

Sadly for OS X PPC we don't have an NVME driver, but it wouldn't be too hard to write one.

So really, the only limitation would be the speed of the bus( PCI/PCI-E ) and the speed of the SSD, minus the overhead.

Got the card, 10A190 now cannot boot – KP on start. In Leopard the card works normally.

Any suggestions what to try? If fixing it does not work, at least I wanna make 10A190 ignore it, so that I can still use it when booted into 10.5.8 (or FreeBSD).
