I have a tight space in my desk drawer that will actually fit the mac pro sans feet. I was thinking of unscrewing the feet and just plopping it in there. Has anyone been using the 7,1 like this with its flat bottom directly on the ground surface and without feet.

I can't really think of any reason this would be bad, but throwing this out there incase there was some design element im not thinking of (dust flying through the bottom tubes into the chassis or something). On a side note, in such a tight space, im hoping the fans are powerful enough to keep her cool :) :)

Apart from protecting it from scratch and dents, I don't see why removing a feet impedes performance. I would be more concerned about your airflow in a tight space. If you don't allow cool air to replace the hot air, you're asking for trouble as these rely on adequate air circulation in lieu of water cooling.

I'm struggling to find any pictures of the bottom. Are there any vents there or is it a single flat piece?

Edit: The last pic on this page, while slightly obstructed, seems to show a single piece. I can't imagine there would be any airflow/cooling issues from removing the feet.

Putting it inside a drawer, on the other hand... :)

I would say as long as the front and back of the Mac Pro are unobstructed then it should be OK. It you have a panel on the desk that closes off the back, or a door on the front that does the same, then all bets are off. Pictures are worth a thousand words, take one with your phone and post it here to show what that drawer looks like.

The drawer is closed on all sides. Id probably leave the front door open when I'm actually using the computer for some extra airflow, but I've used other very powerful PCs in there before without problems, those of course had very robust fans, and Im assuming the Mac Pro is no different. But you know what happens to people who make ASSumptions :)

It doesn't matter how robust the fans are if there's no way for cool air to get in there. At best, the machine will slow down to stop itself from overheating.

Note that the maximum operating temperature for the Mac Pro is 35°, and it will likely get hotter than that in an enclosed drawer.

True, there's only one way to find out I guess. I just wanted to be sure Apple didn't have some weird design of having air or something flow through the feet/handle bar. I know... why would they, but its Apple after all, so you just never know. Wanted to see if anyone else had any experience. I'll guinea pig it :)
