I am finding them a step backwards in usage from previous version

main reason I dislike them is that all roads are now coloured orange, in the UK maps have always in the past shown the colour of the road based on what type of road it is

Motorway - Blue
A Road - Green
All others - Orange

Anyone else feel the same about removal of colour for the roads and how is it looking for other countries

Desktop or mobile? I've been using them on the desktop and I think the interface is really slick. I've had no issues with the cartography or colors, personally.

What country are you in?

Not sure if it's my MAC as it mentions it's using the light version so not sure if some things are not working correctly

Can you have a look at London, the M25 motorway that goes around it, this should be coloured blue, for me it shows orange

this is what it used to look like

I'm using it now too. This is what it looks like for me on the new Maps.

Me too, but I'm also in the US. It must be a UK thing as I think our roads are typically depicted through width/boldness vs. color.

Looks normal to me on my Nex7? I'm on 6.14.3 → First pic

Oops. Just updated to 6.14.4 - now it looks like you described OP. → 2nd pic below

The new google map is only available on desktop, and you have to get an invite to use it.
maps.google.com/preview

Maps app update will arrive sometime in the summer, according to Google at I/O.

I think the traffic layer is enabled in your 6.14.3 screenshot and turned off in the 6.14.4 screenshot. This is why it looks different.

As the poster above me noted, the next version of Google Maps for Android is not expecting to be released until Summer.

Sorry for the confusion, this is the desktop version and is beta (which some have mentioned)

I am hoping some of the issues are due to it being beta

Seems to use the US colouring for roads
Defaults to a US map and wants me to explore it
Also seems to default to kilometers (which is wrong for US & UK, there is an option to change to miles but for me it reverts back to this each time I load)

Just wondering if I jumped on the beta to quick, perhaps it was only intended for US to start with

On my N7 I still have the original layout, so happy to use that still

Report the differences to Google using the feedback option (lower right corner I believe). I'm sure this is the sort of thing they are looking for when it comes to wide-audience beta testing. They may not realize that they applied the US standard to everyone else.

Thanks, I have sent feedback on what the colours are

Just saw a thread on google forums, seems Greece use different colours also

From further looking it does seem like it's mainly setup for US at the moment (the rest could still be finished though), it works on .com but if I go to the maps on local (.co.uk) I still get the old maps

One thing I've noticed with the beta is that it uses old satellite photos in Earth view. On the current maps, at least for the areas I've looked at, it has a 3D mode with updated 3D satellite photos. The beta has only the old 2D satellite view, even when switching to the tilt view.

Edit: I just compared the beta and current Maps. The current Maps has both Earth and Satellite views, while the beta has only Earth. Maybe they're planning to update Earth with 3D buildings, or they plan to have both Earth and Satellite later on.
