( This looks long, but its easy, I promise! I just tried to make it detailed! )

Hello, we have ordered 3 of these around the same time and all three exhibit this same issue. I was wondering if anyone here could test this for me and see if you have the same problem as well.

To test it, you will need something to monitor fan speed and temperature. A very easy option is the iStat Pro widget, available here:

It should show, on the right, fan speeds and temps. We are only really concerned here with the CPU A temperature (celcius, please).

Now you just need to get CPU load up for a minute or two somehow. One easy way that works for me is to run iMovie HD, do the Magic Movie thing and just accept all the defaults. It should open up a camera view with yourself visible and searching for a DV camera. If you go to the dashboard and check iStat, your CPU use should be at least 50% (less than 50% idle) hopefully. Watch your CPU A temperature. If it gets towards 60c, the fans should speed up (faster than 2000 RPM).



Can you guys just let me know if your fans ever exceed 2000 RPM?
This has to be a new model, by the way.. Santa Rosa chipset, nVidia 8600, etc.

Please post whether your fans speed up or not and if you have BootCamp installed. Thanks for any help.
 
just open a terminal and type: yes > /dev/null

That will shoot your cpu temp up.
 
Says who? Why should our CPU fans exceed 2000 rpm?

All I know is:

1) I run Boinc 24/7
2) It is cooling itself perfectly fine.

I did not switch to a Mac to concern myself with details like how fast my CPU fans are spinning or how hot my CPU is. That is for l33t PC users.
 
Got my fan running in the 6000rpm while using handbrake, parallel and surfing the web. They can kick in bu compare to my old macbook where the fan was always on, the MBP is rather silent (which I really like)

What specifically are you testing for? If you want people to do this sort of testing for you generally it is helpful if they understand what and why the test is being performed.

A little more info please.....

These machines we have the fans will never exceed 2000 RPM, no matter what. If we load them up with a 3D application or something else fairly intensive, the CPU temp will climb and climb until they overheat and kernel panic (somewhere around 85c). Just want to see if this is happening to people outside of these three machines.

Ahhh, okay, thanks for the followup information. I've already had a chance to look at the script that governs fan speeds and it -should- be incrementing the fan in specified steps as the temperature goes up. I would venture to guess that what you are experiencing is NOT normal. It will be interesting to see what other people have to say on this topic.

Personally, although I don't yet have -my- new MBP (it ships on the 26th according to Apple), I have been using my brothers new SR MBP (2.4) and I can positively state that the fan speeds do increase as the cpu temp goes up. Although I have not tracked the various rpm settings I suspect that they follow the profile that is given in the fan control script.

welp, mine is at 81 while ripping with iTunes... the fans won't go over 2000rpm. How hot is too hot?

That is quite hot for the fans to stay at 2000. But if it isn't that hot for more than about 30 seconds, they probably don't need to kick on.

The fans are supposed to go to 6000 RPM by 65 celcius. According to Intel, the maximum recommended operating temperature for that processor is 80c.
You have the issue as well.
 
I've got a new rev. C MBP that I just tested out using the "yes > /dev/null" trick.

My fans remained at 2000rpm until the CPU went over 90˚C. At this point, the fans kicked it up a notch, going as high as ~3600rpm, until the temp dropped back down to 90˚C. The fans kicked in again once the temp. went over 90˚. Highest I've seen them go (over about 5 minutes of 100% CPU utilization) is 4300rpm. My temps. never went over 93˚C.

Actually, according to an Intel document (http://download.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/31674502.pdf), the T7700 can tolerate up to 125˚C before forcing a shutdown. And according to another source (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2_Duo_(Merom)), the safe maximum operating temperature of the Merom processors is 100˚C.
 
I have a bunch of stuff open, my CPU temp is 69C and fans are running at ~6000 RPM. I watched this a few minutes ago, and when I close all the programs the fans start slowing down and stabilize at 2000 when the CPU temp gets below 60C.
 
I have a 2.2 Ghz mbp - and my fans will definitely kick up to at least 4,500, sometimes 6,000 rpm when the temperature gets around > 80c.

What did 10.4.10 change in regards to cooling? Honest question; there's nothing in the release notes linked off the macrumors front page, and I've seen no reports elsewhere. Thx.
 
especially in bootcamp this was apparent in mine. Temps reaching 70-80C with no fans on. Once it broke 80C, the fans came on until it went back to about 70C. I fixed this problem with smcfancontrol. at 3000 rpms i get about 50C idle, which is fine. I haven't tried the new patch yet. Does that fix the problem?
 
10.4.10 didn't fix mine.

In Windows (through BootCamp) my fans work fine. At 65c, they kick to 6000 RPM and the temp stabilizes around 60c. In OS X, they are always 2000 RPM.

EDIT: Update! I just tried smcfancontrol again since the 10.4.10 update and it works now. I suppose this can fix my problem. Is there any way to have this adjust fan speed with temperature or only with fixed presets?

smcfancontrol doesn't work on my machine. No matter what RPM I set with it, the fan speed doesn't change.

opposite here. OS X seems to manage the temps fine. Vista doesn't. SMC fan control works fine for me too.

I just tried this and got almost exactly the same results, on a brand new MBP. The fans never got over 4K, and the cpu never got over 92 C. Sitting idle, with not much running for the past 20 minutes, the CPU A is now at 49 C and the fans are both below 2K. The hottest thing on the system is the "GPU diode" at 52 C.

just for comparison, i did the test with my 2.16 MBPro using istatpro
start temp of cpuA is 54C and fans at 2000 rpm, started the test cpu A temp went up to a max of 76C , at this point fans were at 3200 rpm. the fans went up gradually to a max of 4600 rpm and stabilize the cpu A temp at 69C. after closing terminal, fans went down gradually to 2000 rpm while cpu A temp went back to 54C.
 
2.4 GHz 15.4" mac book pro

while burning a disk and listening to music, i played 20 videos simultaneously.
the CPU A peaked at 85 degrees Celcius; by this time, my fans were going at about 4200 rpm.

i too believed that my fans' rotations per minute peaked at around 2000, but i think your problem is that you aren't pushing your laptop hard enough for the fans to kick it up.
 
Ooooo k. So to contradict my previous results, my fans just jumped >5000rpm after my CPU went a few degrees over 60C. I wasn't doing anything particularly strenuous at the time - Firefox, Adium, Word, and CoconutBattery were the only programs active.

So... uh... what gives? Not that I'm particularly worried, but this is a little inconsistent.
