Anyone with an iPhone since the first gen switched to Android?

I been an iPhone user since the very first one, always upgraded every year. Back then the iPhone was light years ahead of the competition. Every year the choice to upgrade is getting tougher. I like iOS and Apple but yesterday I saw a Nexus 7 and I must day Jelly Bean looked highly polished and it appears Android is now starting to reach the polish of iOS. Now don't get me wrong iOS has the "Finish" Android seriously lacks, but I think for the first time Android is now reaching "Good enough" stage. Every update of Android is rapidly catching up on iOS and in some ways surpassing it.

Come next month with the iPhone 5 I don't what to do. The key thing that keeping me with iOS is the eco-system and iCloud. I'm very rooted in Apple and the "just works" and the connection and syncing with each other and with the whole iTunes eco system is superb. Has anyone else switched or considered?

Don't get me wrong I like Apple as they always innovate and push things further and I am proberly gone too far to switch to anything else. Just more me typing outloud.

Judging from your post, your better off staying with iOS. Your giving your reasons to stay with iOS rather than being opened minded and embrace the change. Apple is not a way of life.

I should really come open minded, it is so easy in this day and age to lock yourself away on any side of the fence. If I laid down my bias and kept an open mind I prob would enjoy Android as much as iOS.

Sounds like you're just bored. This isn't enough to switch phones. I switched to Android because I was getting sick of the design limitations and needed more functionality and more control over my phone.

Stick with iOS.

I changed about 6 weeks ago from a iPhone 4S to a Samsung Galaxy S3, I moved my calendar to Google Calendar, same with my contacts. I have a MBP, an iPad and an Apple TV, the only thing I miss is the remote app for the Apple TV. I thought it would be much worse, and that I would switch back to my iPhone 4S. I was wrong.

I have a very large collection of music on iTunes, too much for any phone to handle so I got a iPod classic 160gb about a year and a half ago, that is fixed into my car music system, (My wife has the same setup) every now and again I sync it with my MBP. The music is also transferred and stored onto a NAS drive and played through a Sonus system throughout the house.

I thought it would be much worse, and that I would switch back to my iPhone 4S. I was wrong.

Had iphones since the 1st gen, still have a 3GS/4/4S, switch to GSII last year. Love it. No problems sync'ing with my Macs, and I have everything sync'd with Google anyway (calenders etc). On custom rom now but just rocks having it setup exactly how I want, even battery life is much better than our 4S. If you want to stick to iTunes for music there are apps to sync with it, otherwise Google Music is really nice once you upload your songs (or just move your music folder to micro sd and have your music player manage it).

About the only negative thing would be if your really into the apple-eco, and download apps on iOS (or vice versa with the Android phone) you can't really sync those apps to all the other devices. Like a game for example. If that matters too you then stick with iOS. Personally the eco-system means nothing to me even with all my Apple stuff, I've got a kick ass media setup for streaming home theater for example so don't care about movies/music being only handled by Apple/Apple tv etc, some do though.

Agree with what you said though, before this phone I would never have considered an Android device for myself even after using some. But improvements made in the last year are just superb, just a nice fast smooth OS, having this phone completely changed my thoughts on Android. I don't mind tweaking or setting up properly anyway since I did the same with the iPhones and jailbreaking.

About the only negative thing would be if your really into the apple-eco, and download apps on iOS (or vice versa with the Android phone) you can't really sync those apps to all the other devices.

That's the secret sauce of today's company of keeping you. But if your invested in the Android eco system at least you can get multiple devices (but fragmentation is its enemy).

Aside from the issue with apps not crossing over, I've never allowed an "eco-system" to lock me in. I don't care if my phone, iPad, laptop, ect all have the same info on them. My phone is my primary device to store all my contacts, appointments, ect. There isn't a time when I don't have my phone on me and only my iPad where I need to know an appointment time. So the fact that I alter my calender on my phone and it does the same on my iPad sitting at home is not important to me. I use my iPad as an intermediate device between my phone and laptop. iPhone is to small to browse comfortably on, that is where my iPad comes in handy. But the pieces of critical information that I need at a moments notice is always in my pocket.

I have 3 iPads, a MBP, MBA, ATV, airports out the ying yang, so I'm very much into apple. But the phone is my primary experience and right now iPhone is stale. Has the user experience changed much in 5yrs? No! Does apple spoon feed you features that have been out on other mobile platforms for years? Yes! iPhone may have started all this, but others have taken it and run full speed while apple continues to jog.

Mobile is the future of computing, in this game if anyone falls asleep they will be overtaken. Google is not sleeping and they deserve thumbs up for catching up so fast (patent war aside). I think the next couple years is going to be crucial, we will reach a point of saturation (on the Western side anyway) and that when lock in happens (unless a disruptions comes).

I to have been with the iPhone since the beginning and have had every phone they made.
I also just switched my phone to a HTC One X a little over a week ago.
There are many strongpoints on both platforms and bad things too.
I used to be a staunch supporter of iOS file system and saying that you really don't need one and so on but have been using it on Android nonstop, go figure.

As far as syncing goes I pretty much switched things over to Google sync like all my Contacts, email, music, docs and such and it is syncing just fine and working well.
My biggest problem are trust issues I have with Google and as such I'm still very selective by what information and docs I put with them.
I know that this may seem silly to some people but hey that's how I am.

That brings it back to the file system and my use there off.
But I have to give it to Goggle as they have done a great job of syncing across platforms as all that I also sync to my iPad 3 too.

So yes other then still learning my way around Android, I'm liking it and have not regretted the switch to it.

The one thing I have not changed my mind on are widgets and I still feel that 90% of them are worthless and resource hogs for the most part.
But again this is my opinion on them no one has to agree with me.

If you go into this with eyes wide open and without preconceptions you too will like Android.
I think the biggest thing of people that don't stay with it is because they keep comparing everything on how the iPhone did things and think that that is the only right way of doing things.
Kind of like if you compare every girl you meet to your mother, they will never live up to that.

been iphone user since the first iteration, however, I will be switching to the S3 when my contract with AT&T expires. The new iphone specs have left me disappointed.

I have been a 1st generation user since 2007. Then I upgraded to an iPhone 4 in 2010. I loved both phones and don't regret getting them, at all.

Fast forward to now, it's 2012 and I am not 'automatically' going to upgrade to Apple. There are multiple factors and reasons why I am hesitating.

The biggest reason is that I am planning on getting an unlocked/unsubsidized smartphone. No more contracts. There are a lot of other nice phones out there. The new iPhone happens to be one of them.

The next biggest reason is the software. I like the idea of customization, and the iPhone is limited in that department. Not unless you jailbreak, but I don't like that either. I can see a lot of Cydia apps getting integrated into iOS and it'll be awesome. I suppose this will happen, but years from now. Android looks like it would fill that feature, and I can do that now.

It doesn't hurt to try a new phone. If anything, I will still use iOS with the iPad/iPod touch.
