Can you do me a favor….do they still respond the same way with tattoos? I would greatly appreciate it if you could check.

Not sure if serious. Do you mean with reacting to the skin and to the ink, causing irritation?

It’s a serious question lol. I mean in terms of working. Both my wrists are covered. My left wrist is black ink, and the wrist detection won’t work because of it. Causes it to constantly lock. There’s a magic spot on my right wrist, which is like a fuchsia color, that it will work on but it’s still temperamental. I’d prefer to wear it on my left wrist. I’m sure, eventually, they will figure it out and it’ll work, just not sure if it’ll be an advertising point for them.

Well I learned something new today. So you'd have to do tattoo removal just to wear the watch...

It's the same sensor. I don't have tattoos down there so can't help, but the sensor array is unchanged.
Appreciate the feedback. I’m assuming it must be a hard issue to solve, otherwise I’d imagine they would have done so by now.

Yeah exactly. Still, I do agree it's worth checking with when new sensors come out. It might be something that gets better. I wish I could test it for you, sorry.

If I wanted it to function normally and reliably, yes. To me, that’s just not worth it though lol

I don’t see how they could get around this: the issue is simply that all Apple Watch sensors are based on light going through the skin to check blood vessels.

If there is ink, it block the light therefore the watch cannot it analyze correctly.

I wouldn’t expect a fix in the near future unfortunately.

Heck, I have no tattoos and still have trouble maintaining a HR during a workout. Especially if it is cold. The technology is still
Lacking.
That’s interesting. Never really been able to try it. Like I said previously, I can get it to work on my right wrist, but it’s temperamental…to the point that it’s just not worth it. Surely at some point they have to figure something out. Seems hard to believe with all the technology out there these days, that they don’t have a way for it to work through ink

Being it is depending on optical feedback, dark ink will always interfere with a good reading.

I’m a big hairy man. I have to shave the top part of my wrist for the hr sensor to work reliably. That has worked for me since the Apple Watch 3. Helps I’m a pasty white guy tho. lol.

Without starting the Apple/Garmin row, I gave my old Epix 2 to a friend of mine. He has full sleeves and says the Garmin is the first of many watches he’s tried that works.

Yeah that's a known issue with all wrist based HR right now. I find a glove and a sleeve (or two) makes a decent difference but it's still never perfect.

Yep I have tattoos at my wrist also, I had to switch the wrist I wear the watch on. It kept disconnecting. So frustrating.

Are you sure it is on enough, I have none myself, but sometimes it will stop sensing if the watch is too loose
