As the SDK is new, and people are writing their first apps for the iPhone, we're seeing lots of Tip Calculators, non-synchable ToDo apps and so forth.

I'm wondering how long it will be until developers tackle the kind of apps you see for other platforms (like stuff sold on Handango) where you can manage your finances, create/edit documents, create and update databases -- and synch it all with your PCs and Macs. I've been packing an iPaq for many years now, and I'm used to apps like:

  • Pocket Informant
  • Documents to Go
  • Phat Notes
  • HanDBase, Pocket Quicken
  • Pocket Mirror
  • Resco Explorer (Ok, this is different, but I crave file system control!)
  • (Ok, we've got eWallet, but it doesn't do the important part -- sync!)

See the class of apps I'm talking about?

From what I've read, the iPhone has a potentially more powerful and capable OS than Pocket PC and others. However, I'm also reading that the SDK is also intentionally crippled in some ways. That seems foolish, since Apple is testing every app to make sure it doesn't do anything that could harm the user's system -- unlike the app distribution for the other platforms.

Purely from observation, it seems like Apple wants the iPhone to be only an entertainment platform -- music, other media, games. I hope the SDK becomes a LOT more robust over the next few releases.

Anyone else looking/hoping for the same? Or am I the kind of user who represents too small a market to be worth pursuing?

I would also be interested in this type of app, and would happily pay for one that worked.

I'm seeing several that use the web and outside servers to store and access information, which I'm not at all interested in. I just want to be able to write, edit, and sync with my own computer.

Oh, and password protection would be nice, but it's not a deal-breaker.

I too am waiting for these types of apps. There is so much cheap crap flooding the App Store and it's going to get harder and harder to find quality useful apps if and when they come.

There are some good apps that that I find very useful but they are missing a key feature; direct sync to a Mac/PC. It's great to have the info in my pocket where ever I go but having it available on the desktop - like my email, contacts and calendar are - is very important.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread like this, but for the sake of completeness, our HanDBase for iPhone has been available since mid-October 2008. Hope you'll check it out if interested!

I'm looking forward to apps functioning with other apps ... for example, the Flickr app called Mobile Fotos now has the option to post your Flickr image to Twitter via a few iPhone Twitter apps like Twittelator ... pretty cool how these two spearate apps "work" together
