Hey, all.

I've been following this forum for weeks as I awaited delivery of my M1 Max Studio. Unfortunately, it has the dreaded "whine." I have a feeling it's not as loud as others based on the posts and recordings that I've seen, but there's definitely a peak around 2.1 kHz when I run a recording of the exhaust through a spectrum analysis.

Anyway, my question is, has anyone with a noise problem held on to their Mac Studio beyond the 14 day return period and found the noise went away or attenuated? There's a couple people on a Reddit thread claiming their noise went away: https://www.reddit.com/r/MacStudio/comments/uwetvg
I don't remember anyone saying anything similar on any of these threads, so I thought I'd ask. I know people have said the noise showed up over time, so I'm hoping that maybe it will also go away over time. I've been keeping the machine awake 24/7 (with the monitor off) seeing if maybe it will "break in," but that might just be wishful thinking.

I spoke with Apple support and have an appointment with a Genius on Tuesday, but I'm expecting them to tell me it's in spec. Since it seems like getting a good one is luck of the draw, I'm trying to weigh whether it's worth just holding on to a relatively quiet (though high-pitched) machine.

same. slight fan whoosh audible if my ceiling fan and 2009 mac pro are turned off. totally inaudible if either the ceiling fan or 2009 mac pro turned on.

the ultra studio replaces the mac pro, but still fire up the mac pro occasionally for programs not quite replaced (like aperture).

room temperature is a good 7 to 8 degrees F cooler when the mac pro is not running.

Just a quick update: I left the Mac Studio awake and running over the long weekend and the noise didn’t change at all. I took it to the Apple Store this morning with printouts of a spike in the audio spectrum, and the genius said he “had heard of” the issue but mine was the first one he’d encountered. He didn’t mention if he’d heard about it from the internet or an internal Apple memo. He asked me what I thought was causing the noise, and I said I wasn’t sure if it was the fans or the power supply or some kind of coil whine.

Regardless, the store was so loud we couldn’t hear the computer even being on, and I doubt the situation was much better when he took it in the back. He said I could leave it and they would try to order parts for it but wasn’t sure what parts would need to be replaced without further inspection. In the end, I returned it for a refund since my window was almost up. (He said they couldn’t do an AppleCare exchange for a machine with replaceable parts.) He was nice about the whole thing and seemed like he was genuinely curious about hearing the noise. One of the last things he told me was “I hope the engineers figure it out.”

My initial impulse was to come home and roll the dice on reordering, but I think I might sit tight for a bit and see if things change since I don’t need the machine immediately.

Mine has worsened in my opinion, Apple cheaped out on capacitors again.
