I googled and found that a jailbreak app was available, but i was wondering if ios6 had a setting. It is annoying having to change my screen settings to never lock when I want to stream something.

Anyway to keep airplay content going while iPhone 5 is asleep?

I'm not sure what you mean by "asleep", but on my iPhone 3GS all I have to do is start the video and then press the power button (on the 3GS) and the video will continue to stream to the Apple TV over Airplay. When I do this the screen on the 3GS stays off until I wake up the phone at which time I see the lock screen. This also works with 3rd party video streaming apps and as far as I know it's been that way for a long time -- even under iOS 5 (also works on iOS 6, which I just installed yesterday).

Works the same way for me. YouTube is the only exception to this - the screen stays on or else it closes the app and the connection is lost.
Strange. Mine will play for a minute after the screen locks then freeze, and return to the menu. Only way to play something long form is to keep the screen on.
I'm guessing that you have already done a complete, cold, power down and then restart on the iPhone/iPad. If that doesn't fix the problem then maybe you need to do a restore on the iPhone or Apple TV.
Note that to make this work you need to lock the iPhone/iPad using the power button on same, you shouldn't just wait until the auto lock itself takes place.
I've watched entire movies this way (using Apple's "Videos" app), so I know it works. It also appears to work with my Pogoplug, which is a third-party video streaming device that connects with the Pogoplug iOS app (streams movies/video stored on the Pogoplug to my iOS device, and then to the Apple TV using Airplay).
The Pogoplug also works remotely, so that I can take my iPhone to another location (miles from my home), connect to that local WiFi network, and then stream a video from my home to an Apple TV that is at this other location. Unfortunately, the Pogoplug service and app don't work that reliably over the internet (for remote access), but it's an interesting proof of concept and at home on my local network it works quite well.
I was using AirPlay with a variety of third-party apps last night and I found that the behavior with autolock varied between the apps. Some continue to work with the screen dimmed (after manual or autolock) while others stop or quit. So, this may be a bug or simple programming oversight on the particular apps in question (for those that don't continue with the screen dimmed).
