Anyway to stop startup chime?

I have a first generation intel iMac. Is there anyway to stop the startup chime?

I need to go between windows and mac os a few times tonight using bootcamp, and I hate waking people up with the startup chime. It's so loud.

i've been waiting forever to find something to make the chime go away, but NOTHING i have tried has ever worked, including muting the volume before restarting os x.

True, nothing works, muting the sound before restarting, connecting a jack into the output plug, nothing works, it's an evil chime

IMO the start up chime is just one of those things that Apple should at least give you the option to remove, and don't tell me that's it's the computer saying that it's healthy because when people are sleeping 1 feet away they tend to disagree!

Seriously, imo it's a major usability flaw in Mac's, it's like building a website with music playing and not give the user the option to turn it off, it can be a nag

That seems odd because I always keep my speakers muted unless I need them for the occasional audio or video clip. Consequently, I can't remember the last time I heard the POST bong on startup.

And I gave links to a couple of simple methods for turning it off entirely...there's no need for it to be a "major usability flaw" for anyone.

Is there a headphones port on the iMac. I've noticed on the laptops when you have headphones connected the chime goes to the headphones. I use my iBook in bed sometimes.

Otherwise I have to say, it does defeat the purpose of the chime to add an option to kill it. The chime is important in debugging computers that have problems. That and the the indicator light that everyone with a Mac in their bedroom seems to hate.

That's actually a fair question too I suppose. The only times my Mac ever gets restarted is when I install updates - otherwise it is running 24/7 and I put it to sleep at night. Constantly shutting down and restarting your machine isn't necessary and if anything might add a little bit of wear to your HDD from doing a cold start over and over. Or maybe not, but regardless...

Turning the volume all the way down works just as mute does. When I restart if it's muted, no chime.

If nothing else, you can turn your volume all the way down to the last bar. Surely that isn't loud enough to wake anybody up.

The startup chime isn't just there to make noise, it has a point. It's one of those things that every Mac ever made has had. It indicates that the computer has passed all it's initial hardware tests. This is why it's hard to shut up, but on all my computers turning the volume down also turns the chime down.

I've had many cases where the startup chime has saved me time and energy diagnosing problems.

Mute the volume and it doesn't chime, or just sleep the iMac, it doesn't use much more energy as Apple's powersaving software is excellent.

Otherwise there is software to do this online.

Is StartupSound Intel compatible? I installed it on my new Mac Mini and when I go to access the Preference Pane item, it told me my mac model is not supported. When I look on the software's website, the system requirements mention PowerPC only.

If you need to use windows a lot - have you considered running parallels? At least you wont have to shut down every time you need to use Money, Word or what not.

I think the new version also has hardware graphics acceleration - not good enough for intensive gaming, but everything else.

If it makes you feel a bit more popular - I too cannot get my Imac to shut up. But I do use bootcamp a lot less, since finding parallels, so it's less of an issue for me.

Hmmm....I'll try reinstalling.

On a related note, my volume control keeps resetting itself to the half-way mark after I restart. I like it on maximum, so its pretty annoying to have to move it back all the time.

I found out what was wrong- I was using 1.04 instead of 1.1b. For some reason, the author didn't update his website with the latest release. I found it on MacUpdate.
