I'm helping a lady who would like to convert from using AOL to iCloud for email. She's had AOL forever and would like to move away from it mainly for all the junk she gets.

Her AOL address is her main AppleID. She also has an iCloud address that she got because of MobileMe. She doesn't like the name she has on the iCloud account and wants to change it.

If you look at her settings on the iPhone under iCloud her ID is:
- jkd2254@aol.com
*
Email is switched on. The email address is:
- jkd2254@me.com
*
- I know we could make this jkd2254@icloud.com but she really wants it to be janedoe@icloud.com.

Is there a way to remove her jkd2254@me.com and replace it with a new @icloud.com address?

Alias is a good idea. Thanks for that.

I'd still be curious if completely replace with a new iCloud ID. There's some junk coming in on the current one. And, more importantly she could be easily confused by the alias concepts. (Using aliases might be easy for you and me, but not her and other people I help)

There's a long thread about this on Apple's forum Didn't have the patience to read the whole thing, but it seemed like the consensus was that you can't change an iCloud e-mail address once it's been created. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3145367?start=0&tstart=0

If the person in question really doesn't understand computer stuff, and if you setup the alias for her, why would that be a problem? She would only need to know that janedoe@icloud.com is now her e-mail address. It doesn't sound like she's someone who would ever mess around with the settings anyway.

The AOL email, is that used for making purchases on iTunes etc? The reason I ask is bc if she's gonna keep that to sign in for iTunes purchases you can just have her create an entirely new iCloud account with the name she wants. For example.....

My wife and I use the same gmail account to sign into iTunes to make purchases. So listed under the store, the apple Id is the same gmail on both our iPhones and iPads.

For iCloud, she has her own name@me.com and I have my own name@me.com. Only the me.com address is listed under iCloud. So you have 2 separate accounts basically. Hopefully that makes sense....

That's the way I want to do it. But I can't find a way to remove the oldname@me.com and replace it with newname@me.com. I can switch off Mail in the Settings - iCloud, but if I switch it back on it just turns back on the oldname@me.com.

Bc ur still logged into iCloud....sign out and delete the old account. Create a new one and sign in with it. Then scroll down to the store and put aol address as the apple id

Thanks! That make sense. That's the way mine is. I've had my own domain for years and use an address from that as my Apple ID. When iCloud came out I set up my iOS devices the same way. me@mydomain.com for Apple ID (Store and iTunes) and me@me.com for iCloud services.

Guess the only trick left is getting her contacts, calendars and Photo Stream to the new ID. Maybe an email alias is still the answer. Will an email alias on use the same group of contacts, calendars, etc. or do they get their own?

Sure!

U should be able to export contacts and calendar and import them to new id. Not sure on photo stream tho sorry

I suppose I handle the contacts and calendars this way: When I delete the current iCloud account or turn off each item then delete it'll ask me what to do with the items. I'll say "Leave on iPhone". Then when I add new account hopefully the items on the iPhone will sync in.
