I use AOL and I think when MSN 8 comes out for the mac AOL will be hurt. I don't think I'm going to switch but I think AOL 8.0 should be made for the mac. I've tried of being of treated like 2nd class people while the PC users have the new fancy client and I'm using a newer version of 5.0. It's been 3 years since the mac has gotten a new version. I hope AOL will change when MSN 8 is released. I sent a long note to the CEO "Tell us what you think" thing. MSN says they will advertise the mac version very heavily. AOL doesn't advertise the mac version at all. I doesn't even have the AOL 10.2 GM on the 8.0 CD. Anyone else having the same frustrations as me?

Here we have the niche within a niche again. Not a high percentage of Mac users use AOL. Of those who don't, few would be likely to switch to AOL. You must remember that the Mac has somewhere near 5% of the computer market share. The economics of devoting the same amount of resources to the PC and Mac version just don't make it something a struggling AOL would sees in its interest.

Microsoft has vast resources with which to pump money into a venture that isn't profitable, but does so long enough that it becomes dominant in the market. Then the profits roll in, and another sector becomes their focus. Best example: XBox.

Don't say XBox, please =(

I know this is off topic, but...

Saturn, Jaguar, 3D0, hmmm what other game consoles failed for any reason you can think of? Well, Xbox would be on that list but MS has virtually unlimited $ to put into it and lose. They'll continue to do so until it is dominant. None of those other consoles were backed by a company that could do that, and ultimately failed. Don't get what I'm saying confused with the thought that something will fail unless it has unlimited $ behind it, because this is not true at all. But when something does have unlimited $ behind it, failing is usually not an option. In my opinion, this completely sucks d!ck. F*ck you M$ for not following the darwin style of game console evolution that has prevailed for years.

I wish AOL and MSN would just go away and people would use the REAL internet (you know, with standards like PPP, POP3, SMTP?) :D

Who uses AOL (internet browser)? Secondly, who uses AOL IM? Well, sorry for you if you use AOL, and if you use AOL IM, then try iChat. I don't see AOL with it's 75million users being threatened by MSN's 12million users. Don't see it. Also, I use ICQ and could care less about AOL. Once iChat get's ICQ support I'll use that. I will never let anyone i care about use AOL internet service, and I feel pity for any that do.

3DO rocked! Funny thing is, it went out of business before I could buy one, kinda lucky. The Xbox is loosing more money then Bruce Willis is his hair. It's only a matter of time before it folds. It would bleed too much money before it would be profitable for M$. It won't be long before Bill realizes he's stupid. Why continue to dump money into a loosing cash division? Sony is the M$ of electronics and will annihilate the Xbox. It has failed, it's unlimited $ behind it is only prolonging the inevitable.

I have, well had MSN 8 for Windows. I got disconnected so may times that I finally had to change to AT & T Service. Much better.

MSN 8 interface is meant for complete idiots.

we should have a new thread about this. look at the current generation of games coming for ps2... anything new or innovative for the console market. now look at xbox games... splinter cell, halo 2, ur championship, panzer dragoon, fable (eventually). look at the cross-platform games, they always look better, smoother on xbox. if xbox ever gets the installed base close to what sony has, then we will see developers make some real console games. sony's ps2 library is 80% crap. ps2 has about 3 years left in it's lifespan before ps3 hits and i would be pretty disappointed if i had to look forward to 3 years worth of games that will all look and play the same as they do now. i hope ps3 shows us a bigger leap forward in terms of game development, so that we truly get a next-generation console.

IIRC, EVERY microsoft division is a money looser except for Windows and Office sales/licensing. But these make enough money to keep other divisions afloat until they are able to squeeze out the competition, which has to survive on quality of product.

Yep, the man speaks the truth. MS makes so much money on Windows and Office that they don't know what to do with it. Therefore, they experiment with other niches, hoping to find another cash cow. MSN exists just to f%ck with AOL and X-Box exists to f%ck with Sony. They maintain monopoly power by preventing other companies from gaining monopoly in other areas, then leveraging that power onto the desktop.

speaking from a gaming perspective i am glad x-box was here to f**k with sony. now hopefully sony will release a real console with ps3, instead of the unreliable, technoligically deficient ps2.
but we need another thread on this

You know AOL 8 came out for Mac first, at least it had the look and feel of 8. The new AOL 8 is a beta for Windows, YET it has much more features! You can change the IM sounds (you can do it in mac manualy) You can also downlaod IM skins and such. I have never seen a better AOL than 8. Although I don't use AOL, or I use it VERY rarley. I find that AOL will always wait to the last second for a Mac version...
