If I click on the home button while using AOL radio or Pandora they stop playing. Is there a way to keep them playing while being able to read my mail and do other things on my iphone?
Nope - apps can't run in the background...Apple's not allowing it.
Background apps are coming in September.

Well sort of, apple is launching a push notification system for apps then. I don't believe apps like a radio will be able to play without running.
Damn! Too bad.. Another short sight on Apple's part just like the lack of MMS and the lack of the ability to do true bluetooth A2DP on the phone.
They always do things so well, but then they forget about the BASIC abilities that other cell phones have... But then again everyone has heard these rantings in many other threads on this site, so I don't need to repeat them here!
Oh well, at least the ipod portion works in the background. LOL
They intentionally left background processes out because of it's effect on performance and battery life.
can anyone get AOL radio to work through the headphone jack? I tried to plug in a cable for the aux input in the car and it didn't work .....?
No it really does have to do with battery life. People already complain that the 3G's battery doesn't last long enough. Imagine your phone only lasting an hour. Yeah, it would really be the iBrick at that point. Battery technology is the slowest advancing technology unfortunately.Oh, kind of like how they left 3G out on the first iphone?! What a joke, that's just a sad excuse so they can make us wait until the next phone comes out.
I can see it now.. Iphone 3G version 2:
-5MP camera
-Front camera to do video
-MMS messaging
-User removable battery
-Background processes!!!
lol
It absolutely is because of battery and performance issues.
The technology is already there, however, Apple's SDK terms expressly prohibit the ability for apps to run in the background.

This is not true
Here are some apps that run in the background
iPod (play music and use Safari, I dare you!)
SMS Messaging (get messages anytime)
Phone (receive calls when you're using any app)
iTunes music downloads
Date & Time over network

What if Apple let Apps continue to run in the background. How would performance and batt life be if you had 5 or 10 (many without knowing) running in the background? Can you imagine how busy tech support would be?
