Aperture Vault disconnected?

Hi Guys
I am using 2 X 3TB WD USB3 external HDD for my vaults

Had a large shoot yesterday, uploaded all the images OK,
Did a little editing,
Hooked up both drives,
Went to "update vaults"

One drive was showing disconnected, clicked on that drive and got this message

Then ejected the drive, reconnected, still no change?
Disconnected both drives by ejecting,
Disconnected all cables,
Closed down the iMac, made a coffee and restarted the iMac
Reconnected the Drives, same drive still "not connected"?

Any ideas?
FWIW, when I access the drive through the finder, I can access all the files in there, so, one would think it is connected but not connected when in Aperture mode

Personally, I've stopped using vaults. Instead, I just use CCC to make clones to my entire Aperture library.

I cannot think of any advantage of using the vault feature over just cloning the entire library. CCC makes incremental updates to the destination, so it generally completes in a few minutes (if even that long).

I have my machine set to make a clone to an attached Thunderbolt Drive nightly... and I also have a pair of cheap USB drives that I rotate off site to my work office.

This is all on top of my machine being double backed up locally and to the cloud using Time Machine/Time Capsule, and Crashplan.

Have been thinking about CCC for a while, (not really knowing too much about it)
I have a mixture of Managed and Referenced files, using CCC, would Aperture "find" the referenced files just the same as the vaults?

Vaults do not backup referenced files at all... they only backup managed files.

With CCC you would want to select both the Aperture library, and your folder of referenced originals as sources of the backup data. CCC will then only update changes to the data (incremental backups).

I believe that when you restore the data, you would need to put the library and referenced files back into their original locations.

Since I use a single ~400GB managed A3 library... I just need to worry about the library itself, which is completely portable.

I am not sure what you are asking. CCC will back up whatever you specify as the source.

I was just trying to point out that the built in Aperture Vault program does NOT backup referenced originals. It only backs up managed originals.

Do you keep your referenced originals on the same drive as your library (assuming this is your main drive), or do you keep your referenced originals on your external?

Ditto on this. I gave up on using Vaults for several reasons, mainly the fact that they are stored on the main internal drive and thusly not what I call a backup. If the main drive goes ka-put, so does your Vault. CCC copies my A3 Library to an external twice a day.

I keep most of my work referenced due to space, basically, have the current year managed and the rest managed

The vaults are on 2 external drives
Workflow is that I backup to one of these drives on import

I was thinking that as I backup out of time machine to 2 external drives, I would still be backing up the referenced files?

No... that looks like your aperture application. Your aperture library should be located in your pictures directory by default.

I am still a bit confused on where you keep your referenced originals. I would recommend that you NOT keep them on the same external drive that you use for backups. The reason is that then your originals, and your backups, would be on the same physical drive... and hence if that drive failed, then you lose both your originals and your backups at the same time.

Instead, if you are going to have an external drive for your originals... then I would have them on a "primary" external drive... and that when you back up your aperture library (to your two external backup drives)... also make sure that your originals are getting backed up at the same time.

Your right, I have the remainder referenced

Basically have 2 external drives for the vaults, your right, the backup for the iMac does go on the same drives, will get a third external for the iMac
