Just to be clear so everyone can help....

You are Aperture on a Apple computer of some sort right? With an external hard drive formatted for Mac OS?

If so, exactly what are you trying to do (because there could be many ways to do it)? Are you trying to back up your Aperture Library? Are you trying to export original images or finished versions of those images? Are you moving on to another piece of software like Lightroom or Photos?

If you could be a little more precise we could avoid sending you down a wrong path.

Also, if your photos are managed (located within the Aperture Library) to export them out to an external HD or another folder on your computer's HD that is NOT located within the Aperture Library, you have to select all of them them (the projects), click File>Relocate Originals for Project, then select which folder in Finder you want them to reside in so that Aperture knows where they are. These photos now become referenced. I think that's what you're asking.

Is the library "managed"? Do you want the originals or do you want to save all your edits or both?

If moving to Lightroom then Adobe has an app just for this

Macs don't write the NTFS volumes. What kind of file system is on the disk?

...I have used in on my windows computer ...

If you meant to type "I have used it on my Windows computer" with "it" meaning the external HD then your problem is probably that the HD is formatted NTFS, to which the MacOSX can't write. MacOSX can read NTFS volumes but not write, as ChrisA correctly mentions.

If there is no data on the HD that you need to keep and you are wanting to move the Aperture managed images to the HD for use on a Windows machine then I would recommend that you reformat the HD as an "exFAT" volume, which recent MacOSX versions and recent Windows versions can both read and write. If you HD will now be exclusively used with Macs, then reformat it as "HFS+/Journaled".
