How can I/we attempt to convince apple to allow custom sms tones.

I recently had to use my old phone when travelling and loved having my custom sms tone in use.

My wife and I both have iphones and until i changed my sms tone to one of the other 6 boring tones we constantly mixed up who was getting a message!!!

I just dont see the reason why we cannot have this feature, all they have to do is allow us to chose custom tones from the ringtones we add...!

Is there any reason why the coding, software, etc of the iphone cant handle this?

It's probably part of the "keep it simple" philosophy, let Apple know what you want leaving them a feedback..
You can jailbreak in the mean time

No need to apologise here, that is one of the reasons why there are so many jailbreakers. The phone can do it, and if you jailbreak it's easy to do.

I have had all three iPhone models since they came, i jailbroke the first gen cos it really needed a mass of features that apple had let out....

I didnt jailbreak the 3G cos apple added a few new features with 2.0 then 3.0 and i could live without the few things that still were unavailable.

I really dont want to jailbreak my 3GS just for custom sms.......

I just fail to see apple's reasoning behind it. Even allowing 1 custom sms tone, titled "custom tone"

I know the ins and outs of jailbreaking etc and know that once done you can reverse to give the impression thats its not been tampered with fro warranty reasons but I really miss my R2-D2 sms tones... i never met anyone with a similar tone so could always differentiate.... jus wish i had that basic funtionality with my iPhone.

Just jailbreak it and be happy. Apple wont give you that ability. It's your phone not Apple's.

iPhone 3Gs or 3G ....is able to handle customised ringtone (up to 30 seconds of any MP3 or sound file).
You do NOT need to jailbreak.
You only need to search a little using google, etc.
Good luck.

This is partly my point!

Why don't Apple allow this function???????????????????

They don't like jailbreaking, so why encourage it by not implementing such a basic enhancement?

There is no point in replying to this topic with answers like "just jailbreak" or "apple just don't allow it". I am looking for someone who may know first or second hand as to why Apple have decided against custom SMS???

Why are you so averse to jailbreaking? With Blackra1n it literally takes seconds to jailbreak, and you could have your R2-D2 tone set up in minutes. It probably would be quicker than writing a complaint/suggestion to Apple or posting here, and it would have the added benefit of actually working.

I have read many many post about people bad experiences with jailbreaking from reduced battery life to loss of service/bluetooth/etc.

I personally have never had any of these problems but dont see the point n risking a £440 phone for a simple enhancement.

Did you read the OP at all? He said customized SMS tones, not ringtones.

You're not risking anything, you won't lose anything. I know there are some that have had issues with JB thier i's.... JB and try it out, if you don't like it then switch it back.

As far as why apple won't let you do it? They are control freaks that think you're to stupid to be able to handle a few customizing options.

Jailbreaking your iPhone removes any security protection that Apple has placed on your iPhone to protect it.

Jailbreaking in itself won't harm your iPhone... it's what you do to it after you jailbreak that will.

If you simply want to jailbreak, choose not to install Cydia or Icy and then just go into the iPhone file system and add your custom sounds. Then it will be just like a stock iPhone with custom SMS tones. I've done this many times... just to change it up every once in a while.
