app background data

here is my question: if i am waiting for something to load (for example when a bus is due on a bus tracking application) and things are being a bit wonky--for whatever reason it is taking 10 or 20 seconds to get this, can i press the home button and let the data keep coming or will the app's closing automatically stop this? I know that an app can request to finish data transfers, but is it automatic or only in select cases? I know the indicator generally goes away.

I believe it depends on the app in question.

Indeed.

The App must be programmed to request that iOS allows it to continue in the background.

Apps commonly do this if they perform time consuming tasks (e.g. uploading photos to a web site).

I've found that most apps will stop their processing if you close them, even app updates. I'd think the app updates would download in the background. But so far, if I close the App Store, it might finish a download already started, but the remaining ones are still there the next time I check for updates.

mine do. when i update, it closes out of app store and i watch the downloads on my springboard...

You must be jailbroken (??) I'd be interested to know because this would be a significant improvement over iOS5.

I jailbroke my iPhone4 when I first got it last spring, and was amazed at how much more capable it was. But I went back to stock so I could get iOS5. There was a huge improvement from iOS4 and iOS5, so much so that I didn't jailbreak again.

Apps are supposed to download in the background in iOS4. The only difference in iOS5 is that multiple apps can download simultaneously (whereas it previously downloaded them sequentially).

I should note that apps will continue to appear in the updates list after you've pressed the button. Disappearing only when they have finished downloading.

nope, stock iOS5. It's always done that for me, though, since iOS3... can you be more specific? we might be in agreement xD

whoops didn't see this at first. that's how it works on mine.

If your using the website through the Safari app, then yes that's fine; as I'm doing that all the time . Not sure about apps from the app store.

I'll have to test out closing the App Store app and seeing if the downloads continue. In the past, if the device locks, the downloads stop, even if one is not completed. The locking might be the difference.
