App Cache and Storage hogging

The application cache take so much space. For example, you have camscanner taking up 1 GB even you have cleared all the contents and that's just one of the many apps that hog storage. It's kind of a waste of space. Phoneclean used to be able to do that but it stopped working. Is there no way to actually remove the cache without having to delete and re-install each app? It's not helping that the appstore is slow.

Use Battery Doctor. It works really well for me, quite surprisingly.

i just "restore from backup" every so often since the restores only appears to copy back your data and not everything (music, app files, etc) which would take forever

At the same time, my storage space goes up by 1-2gb. Probably not as good as pre 8.2 cache cleaning apps but meh

The storage management is lousy, partly due to no one ever knowing what the storage is used for. From mystery "other" to a 16Gb phone having 12.6Gb total available, to iTunes saying it has only 10.1Gb available. No one knows and no one seems to care when you ask.

In the ever software bloated world, buy a bigger memory phone is they only answer you get. The skill of lean programming is long gone, and the lazy programmers of today assume we all have top of the line supercomputers to make a call or read an SMS. Software programmers should suffer, every time we find a bug or poorly performing app then they should be linked back to the programmers and physically punished - you can bet the bug rate and management would improve quickly.

Dos was a bit restrictive with the stupid memory management of different sized memory modules.

I prefer the risc microcontrollers, takes real skill when you have under 1kb of ram and a few kb of rom.

I have the 64 GB and I have around 38 GB left which isn't anything really bad. However, I can definitely free a couple more GB if it wasn't for all the app cache. Battery doctor really works huh?

The only cache that I can get Battery Doctor to clean for me is memory (RAM), not storage cache. Some apps used to have an option in their individual settings to clean/clear the cache, but sadly, most if not all developers have quit using that. A single app that would identify and remove/clear storage cache in all apps, would seem to me to be almost impossible to implement. Sure would be nice if someone could come up with one, though. Or at least if the individual devs would give us a "clear cache" option in their settings.

All silly basic apps you'd expect to be no more than a few Mb or even tens of Mb compared to older programs. Yosemite wasn't much more than a dozen of these basic apps!

Spotify really needs a clear cache option, it keeps growing in size and who knows when it clears out the oldest played song. Then if you make a playlist available offline, then remove the playlist, it keeps the songs downloaded! And no way to clear it except uninstall and reinstall.

Is that the apps themselves or more the data that gets cached for those apps?

Huh?? I don't know which Shazam app you are using but mine is only 70 mb.

Methinks you are confusing app size with app PLUS cache size.

I know the .ipa file is about 60Mb, iPhone disagrees when you check storage usage. Maybe someone in apple simply cant count and we all have much more space than we realise.

That's because unless you tap the actual file in manage storage, you are only looking at the total of app size and documents/ data. If you tap the file, you can see the size for both.

Yes it does. It shows app size at the top, and documents/ data underneath.

Photos & Camera are my pain "apps". Taking up 16.5 GB with no way to flush the stuff from the device that I have saved to iCloud already.

Sounds like iTunes forces a purge of "other" or old data.

It should be so simple for something like the old defrag programs to run and wipe and compact what's left. Ask each app what data it uses, and then clear the rest of the memory.
