Look at the Facebook app; does this happen often? I've been using iOS since version 1.1.1 and I've never seen this. How long does it usually take? I cannot open the app.

Its a new feature introduced with iOS 5. Apple gave developers the option to clean their application's caches to save space in backups and such.

I've seen this a couple times... Just thought it was a glitch at first. But that's pretty cool that the app is able to clean itself. :)

I don't think it is an option but I could be wrong.

Indeed, the developer has no control over it happening. In iOS 5.0.1 and above there is more control over what gets "cleaned".

how long does it last cause ive been waiting quite a while?

It's hard to say without knowing the specifics of the App(s) involved.

It shouldn't take too long though. Are you running iOS 5.0.1?

This is interesting about the "Cleaning..." message. When I recently went to China, funny that this operation happened the following Apps:
1) Twitter
2) USA Today
3) BBC News
4) Flickr

The same thing happened to my iPod recently. I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it could not have been longer than 5 to 10 minutes per app. (That is just an estimate because I put it in sleep mode for a while after I noticed it. I checked about 10 minutes later and it was finished.)
