Hey, i was just curious, if there were a few apps crashing ramdomly sometimes, such as skype, and even the system pref's, does anybody know what could be causing it?

my BitRocket crashed like 3 times already for no reason. Everytime I go to preferences it crashes. I haven't tried going there since.

my apps crash all the time, its just the way it goes, mac apps crash just as unexpectedly as windows apps and always will, dont listen to people who say OSX is more stable, this is not just from experiences from one machine, it happened on my G5 imac, the Core Duo imac i borrowed from a friend, and it happens on my mac book pro, i think apple fanboys are just too protective of their OS they dont like admitting they software just as unstable as windows, sure there are no blue screen of deaths, but there is the black kernal panic that is the same exact thing...so yeah

p.s. i know ill get flammed for saying that here, but its just my experience so far with OSX

Could be so many things... post some info about your computer, OS version, peripherals, memory, etc. and we might be able to help narrow it down.

Meanwhile, have you ever repaired disk permissions?

Agreed.

To the post above that says their Mac crashes all the time as well, my experience has been different. I can't remember my MacBook ever crashing and my G5 has crashed in the past, but not very often and I still run several OS9 applications on it.

I would say it is abnormal for your Mac to crash at the rate you described. Check everything you have installed on it. If need be, uninstall all the applications (one-by-one) you've installed since around the time the crashes starting occurring. Perhaps it is one of them.

First, let me say that I've services thousands of PCs and Macs and that I rely on both, so I feel very safe in calling myself an informed and impartial judge in the PC/Mac stability argument.

I'm not going to flame you, but I mostly disagree. First of all, when Mac apps crash, they rarely take down the whole system - that fact alone makes them more stable than PCs. Secondly, the Mac's resistance to attacks from spyware, malware, adware, and viruses make it extraordinarily stable compared to PCs. There's no comparrison really.

Next, let me say that apps crashing "all the time" is not normal on a well-maintained machine in OS X. It might be normal if you've installed a bunch of hacks and OS tweaks or pirated software, but certainly not otherwise.

And the word "crash" is a weak descriptor. Are you talking about a program unexpectedly quitting with no other harmful side effect? Is that the same as a program freezing, requiring a force-quit? Is that the same as a program freezing up the whole OS? No and no. On a healthy Mac, the occasional unexpected quit may happen occasionally during normal use, but rarely at the expense of other programs or the stability of the system.

And let's say you have a Mac and a PC, both of which have gone down the tubes in terms of stability. Assuming the hardware itself is healthy, on a Mac you can usually just clean up the disk directory, do an archive/install on the OS, and probably won't even have to re-install any apps. I can't tell you how many times I've seen PCs which could not be brought back from the brink - where recovering the data was a chore and nothing short of a re-format/re-install would fix it and where all of the restore points were missing or unstable.

In summary, if you do little to keep your machine healthy, then a Mac or a PC will have problems, but there's no comparison in terms of how severe those problems will get. If you do the minimum to keep your machines healthy, then your Mac should hum along and your PC should be fine too, although the bare minimum to keep the PC safe and healthy is orders of magnitude more involved.

the crashes im talking about are when the app unexpectedly shuts down, and yes it dose not take the system with it, yet XP is also very good about not crashing when an app crashes, its slightly more tricky to get XP to dump the app, but usually ending the task will make it close.

Since i built my newest PC about 3 months ago ive had 0 blue screens, since i got my MBP 2 weeks ago ive had a kernel panic (mac blue-screen, why people say macs dont blue-screen i have no clue), and many apps unexpected quit (mostly heavy duty apps, FCS2 and Bryce) thats not very good for a "stable" OS

Now i will say, that safari has never crashed on me, and i think i need to reinstall motion, because there is a particular template that i just cant open, it unexpectedly quits every time

the point im trying to get across is that i think people heavily exaggerate the stability of OSX and its Apps said people want you to believe that "buy a mac, itll never crash" that would be nice but its just not the case and i think people need to know this. But i do agree that all in all it feels more stable than XP, i just havent had such a good experience yet.

Plus if i reboot my PC i know itll restart, i dont know how many times i have to shut this mbp off and back on before itll recognize the OS sometimes.

p.s. i love this spell check feature in safari
