Is there a way to keep apps on my laptop and selectively install them on my iPad as needed akin to the method of adding music? I have plenty of space but i would like to store apps that i do not use frequently. For instance, open table is great app if when i travel but it does network in my home town restaurants.

Yes, you can. Just hook up your iPad to your computer, start iTunes, authorize your computer with your iTunes account, then sync your iPad. You should be prompted if you want to transfer the apps on your iPad to your computer. Click yes. That copies the apps to your computer. Then you can check and uncheck apps as needed to install/delete them from your iPad.
