I really find the transferring/syncing of files via iTunes cumbersome compared to how it's done on Android and Kindle devices. Is there an app or some other way of getting files from one's computer to the iPad?

No. Everything must go through iTunes, either automatically or manually.

What type of "files" exactly are you referring to? You can easily transfer pictures/videos from your iOS device to your PC without iTunes.
