You can always see the size of any app at the bottom.

that is what I mean though, the size at the bottom will not match the "installed size" in usage once the app is on your device.

for instance

the official podcast app says in the app store 9.7mb
under usage with no podcasts at all on my system it is 97mb

Because as you download the podcasts and they are queued the size of the "app" grows. I doubt that any of that expansion is code; caches, data, and other stored information is likely.

Ok, I knew that...that is why I mentioned I had nothing downloaded at the time, that may have been a bad example. How bout the Pandora app (store says 13.4mb, actual on device is about 35.7mb)

Another streaming app that needs to buffer data so that it can be played back without interruption.

What the OP means by the installed size is after when you installed the app but have not opened it yet so it still has the new banner.

My guess would be Apple assumes you have enough space on your device so showing the download size would be more useful for people on limited data/internet plans.
