What are developer's experiences with uploading their original apps to the App Store only to have clone versions be released or worse blatant rip offs be approved by Apple?

To my knowledge, it is possible with certain software to extract some of the media resources (images etc) from an app loaded onto an iPhone/iPad but not the actual code which is encrypted, so knowing this, does Apple protect apps from being copied?

And going forward, is it worth developers turning all media into Base64 strings or using PaintCode software for example and embedding everything into the code so it is encrypted instead of just putting them into Image assets?

How far do pirates go to copy software and what's Apple's stance?
