Hi, I tend to download a lot of stuff that I don't need on my hard drive so I just burn it to cd. This has gotten unwieldy so I need an app to keep a searchable catalog that just says "the file you want is on cd #014". Any suggestions? Thanks.

Tri-Catalog does the trick
There is a pretty neat little program I use to do just this called Tri-Catalog:

you can just quickly stick each of your CD's in consecutively, it scans them, databases all the files and image thumbnails on them, and then ejects them to wait for the next one.
You can then categorize all the CD's- apps, music, movies, backup, etc.- and do searches on them. Since I have about 300 CD's of all this crap, this is indespensable for me!
I've recently noticed that it might by hogging lots of swap space (available space on swap/system drive decreases significantly when it is running for a while), so just keep track of it, or only run it when you need it.

I use a little shareware app called CDFinder at the office to keep track of hundreds of CDs rolling around my office. It's extremely fast, efficient, works well, and updates are free. So far, I've had exactly 0 problems with it (over 4 years).

the free demo holds 25 cd's, so it's good enough for a tryout. and the nice thing is, after registering, it just unlocks, so the 25 you've put in are still there.
