App to close all other apps?

Just got my iPod touch (1st gen, 16 gig, BB clearance), and it's an amazing piece of technology.

However, I'm wondering there's an app available that will close ALL running applications immediately. I'm finding it cumbersome to close out every app by pressing and holding the "home" key each time, and sometimes I switch back and forth (NNW, Mail, Safari, Facebook, etc), forgetting which ones I've had open.

So, that's my question. Are there any "Quit All" applications in the App Store? If not, is the only way to close them all out to turn off the iPod?

This is of absolutely no help, but don't the apps close when you exit them? I've read a few things about holding down the home button to fully exit apps but I've never really understood the difference.

There is no difference. Holding down the home button just force quits a frozen app. Pressing the home button does the same thing but for an unfrozen app. And apps do close when you press the home button. It doesn't go into some sort of standby mode.

No, in fact, that's all he needs. There are no such thing as apps running in the background on the iPhone, except for a very few examples (that you can do absolutely nothing about anyways). Practically speaking, only one app can be running at once. So, yes, the home button is the ultimate "close" button.

The only apps that run in the background are Phone, SMS, and iPod. All other apps quit on exit.

Thanks so much for the info! I guess I thought it was different b/c when I simply "exit" from Safari and re-open it it opens up to the same site I was previously on. I guess I just didn't up enough about closing/quitting/etc.

So if simply exiting the app stops it, what is all the talk about "quit running apps to save battery"?

Safari is also allowed to run in the background. If you ever want to jailbreak you have a couple task managers to choose from. I like bossprefs for my casual tendencies.

Calender runs in background. (fire off an event with an aarm you will know)

Mail runs in the background (If you have Push email or turned on automatica fetching...)

Maps run in the background. The GPS signal stays for a small period of time (5 minutes). It will stay within the same input screens sometimes if you press the home button.

Clock runs in the background. Tried playing with StopWatch or Timer? They both run in the background of course. The timers will continue to run even after pressing the home button. Your alarm clocks will also fire off.

Most of these apps are not fully running in the background; but partially running. As most of us would know that firing up the clock app is not instantaneous, however, firing up the iPod is.

I don't think Clock and Cal are truly background processes. I think the OS is running some kind of notification service to keep track of the alarms and the clock is just saving the current state and then resuming when the app is launched again. So if the stopwatch is running then you press HOME the iPhone remembers the current time and saves the info on the stopwatch. If you come back 10 minutes later it just adds 10 minutes to the stopwatch and keeps going.

The OS seems to allow apps to continue for awhile in the background as long as the memory is needed. So things like MAP, SAFARI, AIM, etc. can run for a short time in the background.

I guess the best answer to the OP's question is that you don't need to worry about closing apps. The OS will take care of it.

i need advice for jailbreaking...

i have an ipod touch 2g and i dont want to wait for a jailbreak so i might buy an iphone or ipod touch 1g but i dont want to pay 30 bucks a month for the iphone... what should i do?
