App Updating Beyond a Joke Now...

I have had issues with updating applications since the App Store first launched. iTunes will say I have x amount of updates available... and then when I click "Update" it takes you to the iTunes store page which says "No Updates Available". Very annoying.

My iPhone also says I have updates available, and shows me what they are correctly, however, when I attempt to update a paid application the following appears:

In fact, I've just tried to update AIM (which is free!) and that came up. Yet I updated Tuner (also free...) and it didn't.

Ironicly, the dialoge says "Click OK" even though there's no "OK" button - where's the QA there?

With the iTunes 7.7.1 update out today, I was hopeful that it would fix my problems. Although it now shows the updates in the iTunes store, once I've downloaded them it still says they are available - asif I hadn't updated anything.

What's more, my iPhone is telling me that a different amount of updates are available - less than iTunes tells me. Yet, there are apps which show updates available on my phone which don't in iTunes! Also, I still have the problem with the message above saying a discounted price is only available to people who own a previous version - despite the fact that I do!

Any help? Anyone else want to rant about similar issues? Please do...

If they owned the application before, why would they have to re-purchase it (basically what the popup is saying)

Today things got even worse! The iTunes store now shows 18 updates! Almost all of them are actually the current version, and when I install any of them, they don't disappear from the list! Agh!

I have 37 updates. Had 28 yesterday. Like you, mainly apps that look to be the same version. It will then take forever to sync.

This all started with the iTunes update.

I am a total fangirl, but, the way they are handling many aspects of the app store are driving me batty.

I get a few updates every few days, it's not on a daily basis.. and I usually just do the updates through the iPhone itself, makes it much easier.. Although, the next time you sync you do have to sync the updates from the phone to iTunes..

and I usually just do the updates through the iPhone itself, makes it much easier..

yeah. 7.7.1 seems to have broken app updating. When I look at the "apps" item in the left nav pane, it will have a "2" badge, but when I click check for updates all of my apps show up. So I clicked on them all, thinking that that would get everything synced back up again. Nope. Next time I synced, they all show up again. AND... I get a receipt from Apple each time with all of my apps listed.

There is a reason I haven't paid for any apps yet. Having troubles with free apps isn't that big of a deal, but having troubles with paid apps would be a pain.

Today my iTunes said it had 8 application updates, but when I click on updates it shows all 34 of my apps. I don't know which ones need updates. I don't want to update all of them because it messes up the locations on the iphone when they reinstall. I checked on the iPhone and it said there were no updates available.

I've noticed that if you only install / update from the phone and disable the app sync in itunes everything is way more stable and clean. Just my opinion but it certainly seems that way

Ya, I've had to resort to manually checking the apps I own for their "version number" and cross-compare that with the version number of the app in the "update your app" screen.

Most of the time, the app I have and the app it 'wants' me to update to are the same version number.

However, some of the apps I have are one version number behind. When I select "Get Update" it seemingly downloads the update. But - when I go back into 'my apps' it says the app is still the older version number.

Like Pandora. I have version 1. The app store says Version 1.1 is available. I even deleted version 1 from my phone AND computer and re-downloaded the entire thing. When it downloads and gets into my app section on iTunes, it STILL says version 1.

This is getting really freaking annoying.

I'm getting the different number of apps needing update also. When I go to the update screen it lists all the apps I have. Most are the same version as I already have.

Looks like they have a little more work to do to get this a smooth as it needs to be.

Yesterday it shows 87 updates in iTunes, while 7 on my Touch. Of course iTunes decided to download all 87. After a while iTunes showed again 5 updates - when clicked "update all" it again downloaded all 87 apps.

The worst part of updates is that each update download adds to the Mobile Applications folder as new download, it doesn't just update the app nor replace older version with new one.

I decided to delete all versions except the latest downloads from Mobile Applications folder. After starting iTunes it again showed 87 updates and went through the whole 87 downloads 2 times, re-filling Mobile Applications folder again.

Yes, it is well beyond joke now.

Referring back to my original post, has anyone at all seen this:

I would happily update apps via my phone if it would let me. There's an update of SpeakEasy which I particularly want. However, I get the message above! As I've already said, it says "Click OK" - you don't 'click' and there's no OK button! I don't really expect this kind of thing from apple. What can I do? Should I contact apple and ask them about it? I've paid for these apps and updates... and I'm not getting them.

Your right, it's a complete mess. I just recently covered this over at my blog. The fact that iTunes showed me that 5 updates, were available, was OK, but then to click '5 Updates Available' and get thrown to an update section of iTunes listing 97 updates. Ok - They must be newer, right? - So I foolishly click 'Download all free updates' - To my astonishment, iTunes 'updated' all of my apps to a previous version.

This needs sorting, and fast.
