I've had the original APP for a couple of years. I also have the Max. I'm also pretty deep in the Apple ecosystem so having devices that (generally) work smoothly with other Apple devices is a real plus for me. I've never listened to any of the top competitors from companies like Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, etc. I'm not an audiophile. I'm not systematically comparing in different environments. I listen to a pretty diverse range of music, classical, jazz, classic rock. I'm very partial towards female vocalists. I also think my hearing in the upper registers is not what it once was. My need for noise cancelling is pretty sporadic. The transparency mode on the original APP and Max, OTOH, are features that have made these really work for me. I'm often in environments where I need to hear things in my environment. I didn't need the APP2 but reviews were generally positive and I decided I wanted to give them a try. I've not had any of the connection issues some have reported. And fit hasn't been an issue (wasn't for the original APP either). I just think some headsets just don't work for some folks with respect to fit and comfort. I've read folks describe the sound as sort of between the APP1 and the Max and I think that's a pretty reasonable starting point. My assessment is they have a fuller but also more nuanced and detailed low end than the APP1, female vocalists have more presence (?) or clarity, and an overall a wider sound stage with better instrument separation and placement. I've not really used noise cancellation in an environment that mattered yet. In environments like on a plane, I felt the noise cancellation of the APP1 was somewhat lacking. Never really surprised me since I just don't think ear buds provide the same kind of physical isolation as over the ear cans. My initial impression is that the noise cancellation on APP2 is better than APP1, but I've not tried them in the kind of environments where I really want effective noise cancellation. Overall, I'm pretty impressed so far.
