I tried the APP and the AirPods 3 and both gave me ear pain in the worst way after 20 min of use. AirPods 2 were always great, but they just don’t sound very good compared to those other 2. Has anyone confirmed that the bulbs are the same size? That’s the part that hurts my ears as it didn’t matter what size tip or how deeply or shallow I put them in. The bulb resting in my ear was the problem.

looks like same size, but different mesh inside.

You should check out the comply foam tips, but they're currently only made for the first gen.
I've got large ear holes, I can't get the large silicone to seal, and they fall out in a few seconds. With the comply, I'm able to actually wear the AirPods pro.

I did reach out to comply a week or so ago after noticing apple is selling different versions for the 1st and 2nd gen, sounds like Comply didn't have early access, so the 2nd gen version is in the works, but no release date yet. I'll found out tomorrow how they work, forgot about the whole tip issue when I ordered them.

People greatly misunderstand the ear pain cause…ITS NOT THE TIPS….it’s the giant size of the plastic bulbous area of the airpod pro. It pushes up against the upper part of the entrance of the ear canal

This person claims the bulb is slightly different: he claims they’re ever so slightly rounder. No other reviewer as far as I know has noticed or mentioned any difference at all, so it could be that this YouTuber is simply being visually confused be the different vent placement (rounder shape might be an illusion).

This 100%. It doesn't hurt inside my ear canal, it hurts basically on the bottom "flap" (I never took anatomy and don't care to Google it) that covers my ear canal. It's where the bulb rests.

That's interesting. There does seem to be a shape change. If the new AAP2 is on the right in that video, it looks like it's shorter in the back and plumper by a tiny amount. I don't think that's going to make it better for me. I will just wait and see how many posts pop up about it and if anyone who had pain with APP do or don't with APP2.

I loved the sound quality and the noise cancelling of the APP2 but the hard plastic rubbed my left ear so badly I couldn’t stand it. (looking at an ear diagram it is my “antitragus” that’s irritated). I tried all the sizes of tips and adjusted the stem in all directions, but nothing worked. I’m so disappointed, I really wanted these to work.

edited to add: I returned the APP2 and got plain old AirPods 2nd generation for 90 bucks at Costco. The sound quality is good enough for me to wear while out walking and puttering around the house. More importantly, they don’t hurt. Wish they had magsafe but it’s not a dealbreaker.

Exact same issue here but it was with my right ear.
