Hello,

This happened to my husband, not me. He woke up this morning to a message on his phone to the effect that he needed to sign into his Apple account. So he did, and then he was taken through a whole series of screens showing that for security reasons, his Apple account had been locked. He had to verify his identity and ultimately reset his password. He has two factor authentication and only one device, his phone. During this process, there was a screen giving the option to sign out of all other devices that may be signed in, but there wouldn't have been any, of course.

Is there, by any chance, any other reason for this to have occurred, other than someone trying, unsuccessfully, to hack into his account?
 
He was phished. Consider any information he provided to have been compromised and teach him never to fall for this again. With two factor authorization, he might be ok, but I’d have him change his password anyway.

What message exactly? A text? Or a Settings popup on their iPhone lockscreen?

If it's the former, chabig is right and they've been phished. If it was the latter, it could have been that their ID was locked from a different user unsuccessfully attempting to login to their account numerous times.

The message was from the iPhone settings, not a text. (He wouldn't have fallen for a text or a browser popup or a link.)

I figured someone was possibly trying to log in to his Apple account and was not successful. They didn't get his password correct. He has two factor authentication and he didn't get a message re a code or anything like that.

Yep in which case you’re absolutely right. If people keep trying to login to an Apple ID with an incorrect password it’ll lock the account. If they try to login with the right password it would send the code via 2FA.
