Benefits of Apple buying SanDisk:

(If you didn't already know Apple HATES Blu-ray.)

Apple could create it's own Read-Only format for watching movies at home and create licensing terms that are the same as licensing terms for DVD versus Blu-Ray licensing.

Apple would own a storage format that's already standard in every DSLR camera, most mobile phones, music players and most consumer/prosumer/professional video and cinema cameras

Apple could finally accept the failure of Apple TV and not only integrate a physical media format in it for watching films, but Apple could also introduce monthly fee free DVR and bring back the days of programmed VHS recording with HD and beyond resolution.

Apple could easily integrate an SD slot in every product they make.

Perfect sized format/drive footprint for ultra thin products...even like huge LCD/LED/OLED televisions.

Apple could then seriously look at acquiring Sony and rebuilding all of that companies products around SDXC.

Apple is the only company with the power, influence and connections to make SDXC (and similar future technologies) a standard outside of the currently accepted markets.

This is such an Apple type of move. They generally get into a market that's already there, but fairly flat and then inject something using similar technologies flipped and usually more usable.

This will NEVER happen. Apple believes the future is streaming content and not what is considered to be a dying tech. The same goes for Sony. Who is willing to buy Sony and all the problems they're having (which are very serious for such a large company).

Maybe Google will buy them. It seems they've been buying a new company every day for the past three months.

Never is a pretty long time. The one thing Apple should come to grips with is that bandwidth access is such a heterogeneous mix globally that it's unreliable as the "Star" of Apple's show and will be for the foreseeable future. This lack of reliability is why AppleTV continues to sit as a dream deferred.

And they could do this with in-house talent, without the expense of buying a company, which would be something like $8 billion.

Apple could easily integrate an SD slot in every product they make.

MacBook Pros already have an SD slot. Whatever issue Apple needs to solve to offer the slot seems to be solved.

Apple could then seriously look at acquiring Sony and rebuilding all of that companies products around SDXC.

Apple is the only company with the power, influence and connections to make SDXC (and similar future technologies) a standard outside of the currently accepted markets.

Sony is worth something like $40 billion. Apple would be so leveraged if they succeeded in acquiring Sony they'd need more than the next generation memory card to pay it off. If it's all that it's cracked up to be, SDXC will be accepted with/without Apple's intervention.

When has Apple moved in on a commodity product like this before? They never owned a diskette maker or a rewritable CD manufacturer, so I'm not so sure it's an "Apple type of move."
